missing on acceleration

well it's engine trouble .. it's seems to miss or take a breath if you like upon heavy acceleration . i had old sludgey oil in the motor which i changed this morning to a nice light fresh oil and it has made some some diffrence but it's still running rough ..
any suggestions of things i could try would be appreciated .

think i'll get that compression test done then hey ! thinks tim i did wonder why i had a foul plug ... but yes with any luck it's a flukey faultly plug .
though i have my doubts as even though it's running- OK ? now it's not right still .. pulling away from an interesection yesterday it backfired a rippa and so fourth ..
p.s just booked it in at the mechanics for monday for a comp test

so i had a compression test done and it's come up all good ! .. had the timing re set.. carby cleaned and float re set .. leads are good ..
still it's running like crap
i need a grey motor , dare i say it expert !
i'm in victoria .. willing to travel for the right guy .
if any one knows of somewhere please let me know.
