I have a standard front end, with an HR diff
but I have torana discs on the front,

sooooo I would like to change my stud pattern to HQ (which is the same as chev ye?)

What do I need to do (and yes I have searched through this section but its hard to understand)
so can someone please tell me a simplified version of what I need to do?

Cheers

Don't think there is enough room to redrill torana discs to HQ nor do I think there is an adaptor kit available for HQ discs to kingpin front end.

Have seen HR rear axles drilled to HQ but there doesn't seem to be a lot of meat left in the axle/wheel rim bolt up face outer area once new studs are fitted and I'm not sure whether an engineer would pass that one :? :? :? .There may be fellas that have done this conversion and run cars for years with no problems but you know what engineers can be like at times.

If you go HR front end then HQ disc setup can be done but you will still have to do something with either changing the pattern on your existing HR axles or changing and modifying another HQ pattern diff to fit or a diff out of another car ( eg 9 inch ) modified to suit.

I don't know whether the HQ pattern rear axles are able to be machined, shortened and resplined to fit the HR diff which could be another option available if its possible to do so??

I don't think there is any cheap buy and bolt up options for this one.

Happy to be corrected by others if anything written above is not right and also interested to see any answers from other blokes on this subject.

if you fit HQ type discs it will alter yor front wheel track also, near to the point where it is pointless doing it, i guess yor doing it for wheel choice about all you'll fit is front runners and even then you won't be able to lower it alot

i think i've seen front torana discs redrilled but unsure as terry said as to success

southcoastcustom off here had some axles for sale a while back, HR axle HQ bolt pattern
if you can't contact him try ek61

thanks guys, so basically your saying if I put a different stud pattern on I could get bigger wheels to fit (like 15's) but I cant lower it?

Nup.

Basically you can't do much with your existing kingpin front end with regard to changing to HQ pattern and not much can be done cheaply and easily with buy and fit parts to change your HR diff to the HQ pattern.

That said, it wouldn't hurt to ring a place like Castlemaine Rod Shop or Hopper Stoppers to see if the Torana discs can be repatterned in HQ.Although as I've said previously, I don't think there is enough room in the torana discs to do it.

No harm in asking.

I guess if there were an easy answer to this you would see lots of kingpin fronted early holdens getting around with HQ pattern rims.

If you are after 15 inch rims alone then you may be able to buy "some'?? rims types in early holden pattern in 15 inch and you may be able to still lower the car but there are a lot of variables to the equation depending on your existing wheel track and the back spacing of your intended choice of wheels as to whether you will have scrub/mounting issues.

You could try 15 inch Volvo rims if 15 inch is what you want. They aren't the best looking 15 inch wheels around but you could chrome them to try and pretty them up a bit.

if you want to risk the adapters, make sure you go with closed face mags.
seeing as the adapters are about an inch thick if you go for an open design five spoke ect, they just scream "look at me officer!!!".

ADAPTERS, once again with the size of them (thickness) you'll be lucky to get a commodore wheel on (no outways dish)

If you cant get the Torana discs redrilled to Chev pattern , maybe you could get them done to - dare I say it - Frod stud pattern ?
Frods are 5 x 4 1/2" whereas EK is 5 x 4 1/4" so not a lot of difference.
That will open up your wheel options , especially if you wanta run older type wheels .
