manifold leak noise

seems i've got a stuffed manifold gasket as the car is really noisey upon exelleration .. i took it to a exhaust joint yesterday in ballarat ( exhaust brothers ? - anyone know them ? ) and they said they could fix it up - easy job !
BUT ! they said they want weld up some butterflylike thing in the manifold as well .. they said it wont matter as all it does is release heat up to the carby ..
i dont like cowboy jobs . is this ok to do or what should i do ?

well if it is only a gasket, then go down to repco and buy a new one. Also don't let him weld a butterfly thing as you said it realese heat to carby, that's stupid why would you want more heat going to something that uses petrol
. But just replace the gasket and see how it goes if not well replace the manifold.

well without know what engine and carby etc is on it, its a bit hard to say but my guess is they are talking about something that sends heat up to the bottom of the inlet manifold to heat it up and help heat the inlet charge when the engine is cold to get it up to temp quicker .....
if that is what it is then welding it up isn't going to hurt performance however it might take the engine longer to warm up ....
having said that i was only aware of that sort of setup being on blue motors onwards .....

Sammy, I have that set-up on a standard grey motor! It bugs the hell out of me. With that said, the least amount of obstruction in your exhaust manifold the better. I would be removing it all together and fitting two bungs into the shaft holes.

... replaced the manifold gasket threw in a little sillicone and that shut it up ( for the minute ! ) as the manifold is warped so it's needs machining in time ...
theo ? what bugs you about having it welded up ? and yeah maybe fitting the two bungs into the holes maybe a good thing ?

Not having it welded isn't what bugs me, Its the bloody clatter it makes under the bonnet when stopped at the lights!!!

I had a similar problem on one of my red motors. When I had extractors fitted, what the exhaust mob did was get some small chunks of steel (about 20mm length - various thickness) and shoved them in between the bolts and the manifold, and tightened the absolute crap out of them.
No more leaks
