Grey Motor Colour Query

G’day Fellas,

I know there are a lot of weird and wonderful variations of the grey motor grey but has any one seen this one before?

It is out of an Adelaide FB. I was told that it has done around 110,000 miles, the wear inside the cylinders is not excessive and is what I’d expect from an engine around that millage and the cam shaft still has the original fiber style cog as well also indicating that it is unmolested.

The colour doesn’t look original so I’m wondering if it has been reconditioned or perhaps just re-sprayed some where along the way. The rear main seal was shot and after a good clean you can see that it has also been painted behind the fly wheel which would indicate that it was professionally sprayed whilst out of the vehicle so if it was just a re-spray they were pretty keen and did a good job. I can not find any trace at all of another colour underneath at all so I’m starting to think it might be the original paint.

Any way it’s not a big drama but I really like the colour so if it is original, I would be keen to paint it the same. If it is not original I’d probably paint it the more conventional colour used by Trev and Rosco.

Yeh, thought that might be the case. It's just strange that the cam has the old fiber cog on it, I suppose if it is an old rebuild they may have used them.

What's the go now? Can I recon a recon? What's the safe maxium diameter you can bore these greys without having put sleaves in the etc?

The lip above the piston wear within the cylinders is olny just distinguishable but I guess it depends upon how much was taken off last time.

Whilst I've got the wallet out is it worth going with the stainless valves to run regular unleaded or is it not really necessary especially if I run premium with an additive?
