Hi Karen
Firstly you need to lock the beer fridge
then get Bender to disassemble and clean all parts with metho.
Reassemble and use a very light oil (sewing machine oil) to lubricate the speedo pivot pin and grease the odometer drive gears.
Replace in car – take for test drive and if all ok unlock the fridge

Karen, don't unlock that beer fridge just yet!! Andrews suggestion is most likely what your problem is and I would approach the problem the same way as Andrew suggests but also in addition to doing that if it still plays up check the speedo inner cable is not dry and binding in the outer cable.Pull the cable assembly from the speedo head and from the gearbox and then pull out the inner cable to see if its dry/dirty or not.Clean the inner steel cable and outer cable (on the inside as well) with a solvant, (I use petrol) dry, and then regrease the inner steel cable (a few drops of oil helps as well) and reassemble and install.
Go with Andrews suggestion first, it's most likely going to fix the problem.

Hi ya folks,
I have a similar problem with my speedo but not the same problem.
My speedo makes a horrible whinning noise when driving and says
I'm doing anywhere from 50 - 60 mph when doing around 20+.
I've pulled it out and I can feel there is something wrong inside.
The bit that spins is not spinning freely.
I'm hoping that I will be able to strip it down clean and grease
as described above and solve the problem.
I've pulled it down as far as is easy (I'll add a pic in a moment).
However it doesn't look like it wants to pull apart easily any more. I
can see there are crimped areas on the chrome surround. Do I have
to bend these out to get at the inner workings or is there a trick I'm
missing?
Maybe I'm just being a scaredycat ... "ohh no! bend my beautiful
chrome... ahhhh"

Right I got the casing off and now....
There seems to be something binding or catching the shaft as it tries to
spin. Maybe just a bit of dust / grime / age related muck? The shop
manual says if there is a prob send it off to a specialist to have it fixed.
Sigh. Anyone a specialist speedometer repairer?
I'd love to pull it apart and clean it but I don't want to stuff it up.
Any tips?

Firstly yes they do. I've had mine apart several times

Only once was it a good reason...
Secondly my speedo has been doing all of the above, noisy and inacurate as all hell when I first drove the car. I disconnected the speedo and left it for a while. I then pulled it and cleaned it all hooked it up and it seemed fine. Checked its accuracy with a handheld GPS and was surprised by the accuracy. Then for some reason it started sticking and for around 10 mins of driving it would stick then come good. I have since checked the speedo cable to make sure it is not looped too tightly and found it was a little too tight for my liking where it went into the box. Since then its been fine
Fingers crosssed that was all it was. It may not help anyone but does give you a few more things to look at, also check your speedo cable for binding.

I got it open but not sure how to pull it apart to get to the bit that's
binding. The cable seems to be ok.
I'll persevere for a little longer before looking at buying another one.

There are a total of 8 screws and 1 retaining clip that hold the assembly together.
It is not too difficult to totally disassemble. Just be very careful with the drag cap return spring.
Start at the front - take off the font dial first by unbending the holding tabs on the side.
