Ok, so there is this weird noise which comes up every now and then... Well there are a lot but this one is recent!

here is a video, maybe you can help identify?


Umm I know when I start my car sometimes it starts knocking (like people do on a door) then you put it in gear and it stops. Im assuming I need new engine blocks.

How many are there?
Where are they located?
Do I just jack up the engine, unbolt and re bolt new ones on?
Do I have to remove anything before I jack up the engine?

Also sometimes I hear whirring from my gearbox...
Just want her running right so I dont break it

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I didn't know the greys came in a diesel.......
That explains why they smoke so much....

My speakers are a little shot on this computer (laptop) so I'll try again tomorrow on a proper machine.

Can't make out if it's tappets or big end or pump, or a couple combined.

Seems strange that it stops when you put it in gear. Or does it stop after warming up a bit?

Not sure what you refer to blocks as. The engine only has one block, it's the bottom 2 thirds of the motor. Big mass of metal (remove entire engine).

It's normally the bits inside it that start causing nasty noises.

J, engine mounts. Shouldn't cause this noise.
Have you had any other feedback ?

I assumed a manual previously (why would the noise stop?), but worked out you must have an auto, and it's slowing the motor down. ?

Does it stop when it warms up, or only when you put it into drive.
Are you fluid levels all at teh right levels ?

Hard to tell as the sound is a bit distorted however there does appear to be a valve train knock in there going by the light tapping noise I can hear.It doesn't appear to be a bottom end problem as they are more of a deeper knocking sound than a tapping noise.

I couldn't see what engine you are running as the engine bay pic was very dark...... Red/Grey ?? Sounds like a grey ??

What gearbox are you running??

If you are running a manual and the "whirring" noise disappears when you depress the clutch then you have a problem with the gearbox or clutch assembly, not with the engine although you still have that apparent valve train knock there??

Seems like you have a series of problems there perhaps??.

You might have to supply some better quality photo/videos and some more info if we are to help identify the problem.

The idea of the video is good,just needs better lighting and maybe clarifying the sound if possible so there's less distortion so it can be heard better.

Isn't that what grey's normally sound like??

yeh might end up putting the 202, hopefully i can do a burnout then!

but yeh it drives fine, just sounds funny. Was hoping to keep it nostalgic and put twin carbies on it but I would like something that would be a bit better for a daily.

Yep you could throw a red in it more power and all that

then you could throw a commodore V6 in even more power

or you could just keep the commodore then you will have more power better handling and better brakes and much nicer ride and be one of those normal people

Or you could save your self some coin adjust those rockers and if its still running drive it till it dies then pick up a running grey for next to nix bolt it straight in and cruise for many more miles

anyway the more reds in these the cooler it makes those of us with greys

and all of the above to be taken with a grain of salt

J , Id lay money on the thrust bearing being the prob if its a manual , dont rest your foot on the clutch pedal when your driving ,It makes the thrust bearing engage and keeps it spinning / wearing .
It would sound a little like when you spin a new nut onto a thread real fast and it whirrrs ...

Bad sound in the vid but a basic question would be is there an exhaust leak - that will give you a tapping/ticking sound.
If its the rockers they could go away when warmed or return at will ,or just keep merrily tapping away (the music of a grey)
If its a deep knock its most likely the bottom end bearing or piston slap from worn rings . Is it very low on compression , does it blow smoke , does it make more noise under different load or circumstances ...

Cut a peice of hose ,stick it to the block and the other end to your ear kinda like a stethascope , you will find where the noise is located - and get back to us .

J, I would be whipping off the rocker cover for a spy, reset the tappets as the other guys suggest while your there.

From the video it does sound top-endish, If tappet gap is o.k maybe check that there isnt a bent push rod, cracked rocker, top of valve chipped off or similar that has increased your valve clearance.

I could be way off the mark but i think this is a good (Cheap) way to start diagonosing the problem, just need to buy a rocker gasket and you'll be set. provided you have the basic tools?

Just do a quick visual on your external rotating parts first though. Just in case...

so nothing to do with clutches etc.

Depending on how I feel, and how much money I have. Its gonna be red, or go in for a service!
