I have some small components that need blasting and possibly more later so i want to make a small blasting cabinet, needs to be easily portable so i can put it away when not in use and want to make it myself to save $$- any tips ?

Keep your eye out for a washing machine on the hard garbage week, pull the guts out so you have just the shell, replace the lid with perspex then cut 2 holes in the front and attach the gloves, close in the bottom to catch the blasting media and your done.
I have not done this but probably will in the near future, Trev .

I was thinking about using an old washer but wasnt sure if it would be the right size, no you got me thinking about using one again.

Sounds a bit like Friday nights yak, hey Trev!! I'm planning on making one too, someday.... Big enough for a rim.

Supercheap sell a basic sand blasting gun with nozzles and hoses ($11.50 on sale!!) add this to the old washing machine, gloves new are $30, perspex is cheap too. $50 should do it..

Why stuff around with all that second hand crap,i bought one from a cheap tool place at a good price. Problem solved. Ready to use,just hook up a second hand vacuum cleaner. Also with any sandblaster make sure your compessor will keep up a decent amount of air.

no offence to anybody but i think some people are quite happy to stuff around with old bits of crap to save 'em selves a couple of bucks
eggzample, a mate of mines old man will stuff around under a car for a couple of days to make a second hand HQ exhaust KINDA fit a '40 &*#@ just to save a couple of hundred bucks that he's not short of

Not going to pay cash for something that wont get used much, i already have the gun but need something to stop crap going everywhere.

What about an old clothes dryer? It has the perspex window and door for small items already. Our dryer's busted so I might give a go when I have a few spare minutes ..... watch this space ........ sometime next year

Well Trev if you use a brand new one they soon stuff up sucking the abrasive dust. Thats why you use a second hand one. But then you Einsteins out there would have thought about that hey? The other reason why i chose not to build one from second hand crap is that if they are not sealed properly you end up breathing all that shit in. You also need to fit an electric lght for obvious reasons and i'm sure we all stick to the law and not play with electricity unless we are "qualified". Then theres the issue of a hopper for the gun to collect abrasive. I don't have enough time to do my own cars let alone build something that i can buy cheaply.

The last blasting cabinet I used didn't run a vaccuum it just let all the media fall into the hopper at the bottom. Plus it leaked

I'm thinking of mounting a lead light inside (out through a grommet) and tapering the base into a hopper/tub to hold all of the media which in turn will have the pickup sitting in it. Sort of similar to the bought one I used, very simple and effective.

i made my own sandblasting cabinet from scratch believe it or not i used mdf only because im in the cabinet making trade i did go and look at quite a few different examples and then made mine to suit me its big enough to do bike frames and even did my front susspension its been one of the best tools iv ever made and the amount of use it gets is amasing allways have people come in the shop asking if they can blast various parts ill try and post up some photos of it so dont let anyone say it cant be done its just a case of doing your research on volumes /air pressures and ect
