I just use gasket goo on one side to hold it in place.

I pretty much do as DR said.

I find if you coat both sides of the gasket it tends to get a bit too "squishy" and can move around a bit too much when tightening.The only spots where I would use goo on both sides would be where two gasket ends join and butt together.

I'd use goo on the sump side and leave the pan side dry.

I used the GOO to fill my holes in my radiator at Yamba and its still going!!!
