Can anyone tell me how I would find out if a motor is listed as stolen  . I have a red motor that was given to me with one of my cars and now I am told the numbers have been ground off and restamped  , and yes I am worried it is stolen. I know reves do finance checks but what about stolen motors.
Any help would be greatly accepted

I wouldn't think anyone would be silly enough to go to the effort of restamping a block with stolen numbers. Surely no ones that dumb......

Just got the motor numbers back N803758P. My brother who has had a bit to do with these says this doesn't sound like a holden set of numbers. Why else would they grind out the old and replace with new ones  .
Another herdal to over come

I think you might want to re-read your reply  , they dont stamp numbers off stolen engines, they re stamp stolen engines with legit numbers

not 100% but that sounds like a police issued No
some people do it with legit motors  :? :D  to avoid engineers reports
if it's a police No it may have been stolen at some stage

re: checking it out sometimes on a good day if the sun and moon line up correctly the police may tell you
what i've done before is ring revs but you need a chassis No and possably a rego No

You'll most likely find its a NASCO replacement block with that series of numbers. There was talk of this same subject on FE/FC Forum a few years back.

I don't think you'll find that it's a stolen motor but rather more in line with what Rat has said being a police issue number that was given as a number for a replacement NASCO block.

I think ( from memory ) that the Victorian Police issued replacement engine numbers started with VP or had VP as part of the engine number sequence.

I've personally seen another grey motor with an NP number at Phil Ilfields place in Newcastle a few years back.

NP numbers aren't common but do exist.

You just said the same thing that DR was saying, .

With the VP numbers they usually start with a V1234567P, so it does sound like a NSW re stamped block N803758P, makes sense to me anyway :D , Trev 8) .

Terry it's a red and there is grind marks. If there were no marks I wouldn't be so worried. I will try revs and if that doesn't work might go to the cops and see what they say.....
Thanks guys for thye feed back, still dont feel that conifdent but there is hope. The bad thing is that every thing is so new, no ware marks on cam new alt and dissy, even the crome rocker cover is new :? :? :? Oh well will know tomorrow

Ah, so it's a RED motor.

Grind marks may be a bit worrying then ??.

Not sure on red motors as to whether they also had NP numbers stamped on replacement blocks.Maybe early ones did have NP numbers ?? but I'm pretty sure later red replacement blocks were numbered at the factory and not left blank for police numbers to be stamped on later.

The only bloke that I can think of that may be able to fully answer this question would be forum member DR TERRY.

Perhaps send him a PM.

I have PM'd him here and there with technical questions and have always found him to be willing to help.

According to what I've just found on another site, your number is the 3758th engine number stamped by NSW Police in 1980 if what I've read is correct.

Replacement engine numbers were issued by NSW Police in the '70's and not by the RTA ( or DMR as I think they were called back then??) so it's possible they were still doing it this way in the early '80's??.
