Problem with Gear Shift Selector Rod (Help!)

Hi guys - I am new to EKs and am having trouble with my manual gear selection.

The first problem I am trying to resolve is that I cannot change into first gear. The linkages near the bottom end of the steering column seem quite "sloppy". When I try to change into first, the selector rod (below the car) overlaps the control rod and becomes jammed.

According to the selector rod adjustment procedure in my original EK Holden shop manual, the selector rod should be adjusted so that there is a distance of 3-7/16 to 3-11/16 inches between the upper side of the gearshift control lever knob and the underside of the steering wheel rim.

No matter how I adjust the selector rod, the above dimension does not change from around 4-3/4 inches and the rods keep clashing below the chassis.

Any suggestions? Is there anyone in the Melbourne area who wouldn't mind me dropping around with my car for some advice? Can anyone recommend a competent mechanic in the NE suburbs, with plenty of experience with these cars?

Hi wb4bb,
I dunno but there should be a nylon insert in the lever which comes out of your steering columm - the other lever slides up and down (1 + R and 2 + 3 positions) through it - if that nylon insert is missing you might get a whole heap of slack which is causing the problem.

I think there is one mechanic in your area who is on this forum - I'm not going to name him cause I might be wroing , but he might send you a pm soon now that youve asked - hold tight.

I would say your linkage rods are worn and the holes on the selector levers worn oval. You can repair these by welding the rods and dressing back down to the right size and same goes for the levers.

Can anyone suggest where I could obtain a replacement knob for the end of my gearshift selector lever?
