so apparently there is no vacuum, when running triple su's ?

the trimatic box uses vacuum to kick down gears when accelerating.. but when running an SU setup there is no where to get the vacuum from ?

is this true?

i also heard there is a mechanical way to make the auto kick down in the box work..

your thoughts?

Bex, The vacuum modulator is there for upshifts only on the auto, and yes you do need a good vacuum source, but there is nothing stopping you from fiiting a balance pipe that runs along the manifold bridging the three manifolds together...........very similar to this simple diagram. If you get the gist!

I have an HG trimatic here that has a cable kick down, Trev .

I sorta kinda had a thought the early traumatic's had a cable set up, Trev's just confirmed it.

Traumatics come in 2 types of kickdown.....
Cable & Mechanical Linkage and Electric solenoid activated. Depending on Model and year.

Electric kickdown is way easier to fit. Press button switch on the floor under the GO-GO pedal and your done.

a guy looked at my car on the weekend and said this little pole thingy sticking up is the vacuum kickdown for the trimatic....

the modulator is located on the rear of the gearbox small round thing, if all is original it will have a small peice of rubber hose connected to a thin metal pipe that goes up to the rear passenger side of the motor, this is where it should conect to a vacume sorce in the manifold

hmm ok well that thin pipe is there.... and there is a hole in the manifold which is where its meant to get the vacuum from but this guy was adamant that you cannot connect it and get the vacuum from there??

i'd do as the other guys have suggested, run a pipe to the inlet manifold for each carby and join them together into one pipe that feeds the brake booster if you have one aswell as the modulator on the trimatic.


as you san see in this pic, this bloke has made a similar setup which links each carby - it looks like his manifolds are steel though.

my suggestion would be to get a screw in brass fitting with the other end of it being barbed and then drill and tap a hole into each manifold to screw it into....

if you drill do it off the moter so you dont get shaveings in the cylinders

there has to be vacum between the carb and the block or else how will it suck air/fuel in to run the engine ,,,,,,air induction is a fundamental part of the combustion engine ,, diesel ,petrol gas , two strokes all use vacum

and my trimatic is a vacum line from the back of the box,

The kickdown connector location is here, on this model trans the kickdown is electrically operated. 3rd - down to 2nd or if your lucky back to 1st at a lower speed.


The vacuum modulator is here, a good vacuum supply is essential for good and firm auto upshifts. 1st - 2nd - 3rd
