The EK has been taken off the road for a few days for some repairs

First job, removing the rear windows to get some rust repairs done. We were expecting a bit of surface rust but not this!............bloody hell !







the other side wasnt as bad :



Luckily we have a friend up the road who is a retired panel beater and is doing the work for us. He also owns a great looking EK sedan! Anyway the rust is being cut out over the next few days. Heres another pic of the work in progress:



Drivers side mirror has also been removed, it was pretty cactus anyway:



Will post a few more pics of progress for anyone interested as the work continues. When the rear windows have been finished, the front window will be coming out next to do dome rust repair, fingers crossed it wont be as bad as this.

Keep on the good side of your retired panelbeater!!

That rust is pretty typical for that area.The rubber gets old and hard over the years and shrinks and cracks.Water gets in and just stays there doing its damage silently .

Amazing what happens where it can't be seen.
Looked good where the paint was.

I'll need to check there on mine.

Finny...Hiya and yep it was a bit of a surprise. My Dad was quite concerned about it and we played it down a bit, thinking it wouldn't have holes in it or anything...lol
We were wrong Dad knows best Not telling him that though..lol.

Anyway not a huge drama, it could be much worse.

A little more progress made today. Rust has been cut out and new corner section has been put in place.



The top edge of the newly fashioned corner piece was basically spot welded to the car by drilling a number of small holes along the panel.



For the outside edge, Ron (our panelbeating friend ) Ran a heap of small tack welds along the piece until it was basically welded along its entire length. Ron prefers to do it like this as he reckons one long continuous weld can sometimes cause the panel to distort.






Anyway wont be long before the straight section is welded into place. Little bit of a tidy up, bit of primer, and then a spray and shes all good to go

Top stuff Lulu. Looks like you caught the rust in the nick of time.

parisian/stewart...Hi, how have you been? Yes we were told we had caught it just in the nick of time. If the seller had of left it too much longer (lives near the beach/parks near ocean) to sell, it might have been a different story. So glad it's worked out and she's with us now..getting pampered.

Spot welds like Ron is doing will do the trick Lulu.

They used quite a bit of spot welding at the factory on a lot of the body parts.

That's all they use nowadays!!

Are those panels hand made or rust replacements from somewhere?

paroharo, the parts are hand made. I'm not sure how long it took Ron to knock them up but they sure were a good fit

Lulu, Ron is doing a great job, if he keeps on going the way he is it will be a mighty fine wagon.
