fitment of battery tray

Post by hammondo »

My ute (which was given to me as a pile of parts), came with two battery trays, which I resume are original, but I can't figure out how they bolt in. It seems from looking through other peoples pics on this site that it is supposed to bolt down on the inner guard towards the front on the passenger side, but there are no bolt holes in the inner guard there. In fact I can't find holes anywhere that line up.

How is it usually mounted?

Thanks
Greg

Hi Greg,
if it's like mine, there should be a right angled wall which comes out from the side of the sub-frame skirt about a battery length and a bit from the radiator baflle - there is also another wall which comes out from just behind the radiator baffle.
The tray bolts in by two small bolts at both the front and rear and one small bolt on the engine side of the right angled wall.
You should find a drain hole in the horizontal section of the skirt (somewhere over where the crossmember is - that hole is fairly central to the battery box floor...............

hope this helps.

well the bolt hole configuration you have described matches the battery tray, but I don't think the right angle wall is there. Is it welded to the inner guard or bolted on. Maybe theres something still in one of the boxes that goes in between.

Thanks Rosco, I will have a look through the parts again, there are still a couple of parts that I don't know what are for.

If anyone has a picture, don't be afraid to post it up.

Thanks

Hi Greg,
mine is spot welded to the sub-frame skirt - perhaps your's may have been removed.
I can post a pic, but it will be later today/tonight - have much work to do in shed for nats.............on my day off.

I am unaware that the General would not have fitted the battery box/tray to all vehicles.

There is a chance that it was ground off if a battery was fitted elsewhere in the vehicle....... especially if a larger V engine was fitted at some time.

frats,
Rosco

ps will take a Box Brownie of mine this afternoon and post tonight.

They are welded to the subframe-someone must have cut it off.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

I guess someone must have cut it off (and I bet I know who  , the same guy who sold the engine and gearbox and stripped the thing down). I will take a pic of what I have on the guard, but I think I will end up just drilling and bolting the tray to the inner guard.

and Rosco, if its not too much trouble a picture would be great.

Thanks

Hi Greg,
didn't get a chance to take a current pic or two of my box and tray........... but found these on a disk from a few years ago - it will show you what the frame looks like without the tray fitted .............. hope it helps.

Thanks Rosco, those brackets are long gone from my engine bay. I may have to manufacture something. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

ony problem with that is that its a ute, that I want to actually use as a ute so a battery box in the tray might get in the way. I was thinking one of those plastic battery boxes might be ok.

One of those battery boxes would be great,
Put it under the lift up section you could put in the front half of the ute bed
Lots of room under there!
