Can anyone please help, I'm about to start fixing the brakes on the FB, fitting torana front disks. I want to know what is needed for the rear brakes to get the braking right. I know I have to change wheel cylinders but what size do I need what mods do I need to do to the rear shoe's ect. Any pictures would really be helpful. I have been looking for a HR diff but I am having trouble finding I can afford. Having just been to the kustom nationals I am keen to get the old girl finished. Cheers PAT :)

Hi Pat,
I was going to fit LH/X rotors and calipers to mine - still have them, ready to go - all re-conditioned, but decided against it.
I had the HR calipers done up as they use two pistons per caliper - that is the advice I got at the time.
For standard HR disc set up using a single line system and a VH 40-L servo booster, I was told to use the small rear wheel cylinders.
These have a bore of 0.5625" (very small) to prevent the rear brakes locking up.
These smaller cylinders use button ended pistons and require different shoes - I am yet to find some "spares".

If you go to a Torana system and look at the specs for that, you will find it is a split system - I did not go further in changing mine once told to stick with HR and sorry, can't tell you the bore size.

There will undoubtedly be quite a few who have done this - I hope they will post information which I will appreciate and consider when I fit a split system at a later stage

frats,
Rosco

i cant really comment as i have an a vl turbo rear end

rosco is right, if your using a single line system then you need a porptioning valve

im using a twin system that is designed to be used with brakes of the same ilk

we should have a tech section on brakes

dos and donts

rosco has some fantastic advice!

i use uc torana disc brakes on hr stubs with a porptioning valve
from a hq and standard ek rear end never had a problem with it and its been like that 4 3yrs

in saying that i was talking to a guy who runs a brake place and is a wizz with early holdens aswell he said in the 30 yrs he has been running his buisness he has never heard of a fb or ek locking up brakes with disc front with no porptioning valve and a standard rear end and if anyone has had a problem like this he would love to see it as he has done many conversions and never had any troubles ?maybe because of the size of the fb/ek cylinders ?

i used to have the same thing on my EK Wagon yrs ago ... im just trying to remember but i think i just used the entire torana rear drum setup ...

either way i know you need to use the wheel cylinders that were for a front disc torana ... i did this with a single circuit and vh40 booster and it was spot on!
