steering column help

Hi all.
Just a quick question that popped into my mind as i was trawling the forums instead of studying
My car runs a 186 and powerglide, with a center console out of a gemini with a horrible looking shifter on it. I was wondering if i could go back to column shift while keeping the powerglide by using a HR steering column equipped for a powerglide. The reason for this is I am looking to buy some new carpet, and I thought it would be good if I could loose the center console as i hate it (spoils the bench seat feel) before getting the new carpet. If this mod is possible, is it labor intensive or is it a backyard kind of job? Another reason for me wanting to do this mod is it will allow 3 mates to sit in the front without me having to stroke one of their upper thighs in an attempt to change gears
If this is a hard job, i would also be interested in fitting a better looking shifter like a Hurst branded one or a B&M shifter. Can anyone shed any light on whether these can be used in my setup? thanks
Andrew
