Hi
just wondering about gilmer belt drive kits
can you fit them to stock engine's like a 186 :?:
or does it need extra work eg head; pistons :?:

Hi EK JAY. Just make sure you have enough room from engine to radiator. i bought a flex e fan and did not fit (no room) and those gilmers are quiet big but look good 8)

the gilmer look

hey jay,

i was also loking at one of those as i thought it would look awesome on the engine... just put a pair of thermal fans on the other side of radiator...

but, do they actually do anything as far as performance, or are they purely for show...

let me know how you go...

has anyone else fitted one of these...

A word of warning on the gilmer setups, after a while (especially on a daily driver) they wear causing the belt to slowly track forward and wear itself down on the alternator pulley edge. Then you spit belts out on a regular occurance. My mate ran them on his escort for 2-3 years then this started happening quite regularly till he worked out why.

Straight cut timing gear also make a whining noise. But on long trips become somewhat hard to drown out without going deaf!

I ran some from diecrest engineering and they were bloody loud! Especially in a ute with no soundproofing....

Hi all
I had a gilmer set up on a EK van i bought from Greystanes about 4 or 5 years ago. it was running a 186 with 5 speed.
As you say ... sounded great but eventually wore the edge off the belt and wandered around everywhere on the 40 or 50mm wide pulleys..

Everything had to be in perfect alignment otherwise the belt will run against the shoulder of the pulleys. especially the alternator pulley.

As performance.... nix....... made know difference.
I think i sold the lot at a swap meet somewhere for $100
