Hi guys, so a mechanic mate of mine says to get fish oil onto the shell pronto to stop any further rusting. This is my new girl that some of you saw pix of yesterday.. FB4655 mentions to take care as sometimes the blasting sand can get congealed (because of the oil - i paraphase here ), and the blaster will always ask that it be free from grease etc..

What does the team think on this? I plan to blast or dip sometime in january/February, should i go ahead and coat in fish oil now - there is a fair bit of rust that needs to be inhibited.

What's the consensus?

I personally wouldn't be worrying about doing any sort of rust prevention at this stage. I'd just be getting it stripped down and cleaned up ready for sandblasting or dipping.
The time between now and Jan when you plan on blasting isn't going to make much difference to the rust thats already there.
If you put fish oil into it now you will have a real mess to try and clean when you sand blast it as the sand will stick to it like shit to a blanket.

Im with malcolm,let the blaster or dipper weave their magic,they will expose everything.You will probable find you will have to cut out some sections and replace them.I find that a good oportunity to treat your rust.Clean it properly first with a wire wheel or wire brush in hard to reach areas.I usually hit it with rust converter at that point.

Hi Russ. I had my car blasted in 1988,when i got it home,i wiped Jenolite over it with a rag and still no rust to this day. Regards Daz.

good to know guys - i guess that after this many years a few more months aint going to hurt. Interestingly there is an old surfie sticker on the inside of the front door, so i think it may have been a beach car as mentioned..

I don't fancy anymore cleaner than necessary...

Has anyone done dipping? I read somewhere on the forum that those that dip never go back!!

I have a dilema, i currently have a poly tarp over it to keep the night dew off it and i'm stripping it down during the evenings and weekends with the plan to have it in bits by mid-nov. I understand what ur saying about getting it under cover. We are moving house in March and i have a spot waiting in the new garage for it (while the wifes Yaris learns wot QLD's summer is all about )

The old girl is getting totally stripped, the lining is stuffed and is being removed this weekend - all mats and carpet missing, the only thing left to worry about it the metal hance my questions on fish oil. All parts are being stored in a local U-Store, i think i just have to get it apart quickly...

remember it's 45 odd years old and looking at it, it hasn't been pampered, so the next 6 months or so isn't going to make any difference, but once you start stripping paint and doing repairs you need to keep it dry but this sounds like it's covered re: the comming garage
