hey team

i'm lookng for some ideas on tidying up engine bay...

i had a chat to an auto electrician today & i basicaly said that i want to get rid of all the wires & put it all in the guards... his response wasn't positive, as he started to explane how the cost would be alot. because he would need to rewire the whole car, as the original harnes wont reach...
then i ask what are my other option, he said he could try & tidy it up and hide what he could, (staying inside the engine bay).

this is what i'm starting with...


how did you do yours... did you have to get a new wiring harnes...
can you also show some pics...

Matty, Stick it behind the guards, piece of piss! the look is far neater than anything else you can come up with.

Matty grab a blue-motor/late model alternator with built-in reg, that straight away gets the old reg of the firewall

That engine bay doesn't look to bad to me, I was expecting something real bad that resembled a bulldog trying to eat spaghetti but yours to me looks very neat. I would just paint and detail what's there and it will look a million bucks. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hide the wiring, it's as easy as it gets. All you have to do is extend the wires. So long as you know how to solder and use heat shrink your in business.

I just spent the last two days wiring up my Bedford Motorhome. Time consuming but easy stuff.

It's not like they are hard with computers to worry about.

smooth & jay, i think i'll give it a go... as patience is a strong point of mine, & the auto electrician reckons it's going to cost heaps to do...

i'll call him & tell him to get every thing working then i'll pick the car up & give the rewiring a go myself...

jay if i get waht you told me to get from bunning will that exclude me from using a soldering & the heat shrink that smooth mentioned...

Hey Matty, I pulled all of the harness in the engine bay back through the hole in the fire wall and ran it along the inside and out the drain holes after adding some trailer wire harness to lengthen the wires to get to the headlights and indicators. From memory I used a five wire trailer harness on the drivers side for lights and coil and temp sender, Then a three wire harness for the passenger side. Trailer harness is cheap and available at any auto shop. Have a go and if you don't succeed then I'm sure the forum will get you through. Mate I hope we're goin to see this wagon at YAMBA!!! I am hopfully getting my sedan on the hoist this weekend to replace a clutch, so I'll take those pics of the split exhaust for you.

Oh! Matty, I put the regulator in behind the glove box so all you could in the engine bay is the screw heads to clean the wall and no ugly holes. I'll try to get some pics of the engine bay for you as well.

Can also be taken as "don't want to do it". Especially with the comments about a full rewire.

Matty take plenty off pics and as many notes as you can while doing it. Especially if its over a few weekends, that way everything should work again once reconnected.

Be sure to solder the wires. Crimps will only end in tears. It's not hard - Buy One - Practice - Get into it.

Heat shrink to cover the joins.

Matty, I agree with Smooth, definatly solder and heat shrink. I did find out the hard way. Also if your lucky the trailer wires will match the wires your lengthening.

and remember the wires are colour coded so if you cut a green wire to extend it, it has to join back to the green wire
starting to wish i stayed in sydney i could make a living out of doing this stuff that's simple to me and not so simple to others
matty if yor having ago yorself remember baby steps, don't go like a bull at a gate tearing stuff out everywhere just go little bit by little bit

Hey Matty like Smooth said solder and heat shrink are the only option and try to get acid core solder instead of normal resin core works mutch better on older wiring and have a look at Tommos car in My FB on page 2 for some other tips

My voltage regulator is mounted in the original holes, but on the inside of the firewall.
Simply remove it from the engine bay, turn it upside down, and screw it on from the inside.
I made a cover for the terminals out of a peice of hose to prevent
my passengers from recieving a shock if they touched with thier toes.
The firewall holes were welded over.
