new rubbers/ seals

Post by mattymartin »

hey team,

car is getting all the rest of the rust & bumps fix over the next few weeks & the panelbeater ask if i can get new rubbers...

the ones that go around the back wagon side windows.
and all those (dont know what they are called) bits that sit in the doors where the windows are, also rubbers for the front pivoting windows...
i pretty much need every piece of rubber except the windscreen is good,

where is the best place to get these & what do i ask for... so i dont sound soooooooo dumb & get ripped off.

also who puts rubbers back onto the car is that usually the owners, panelbeaters, mechanic or painters job...

thanks

try clark rubber if you have one nearby
for door rubbers just take a piece of the old
rubber wth you as for window rubbers they do
stock the bailey channel aswell and its ALOT cheaper
but as for the larger window rubbers you may have to use
rare spares or some body like that ;a full rubber kit will cost
a fortune i know a sedan cost over $1000  jay

cost of rubber

Post by mattymartin »

thanks jay,

i've heard its expensive but i feel that its some thing that i would rather spend the money on and get the goods as i dont want to replace them for a very, very, very long time.
where did you get yours from, (rare's or clarks) & are you happy with them...

Matty, there are a few ways you can do this. Buy the complete kit from Rare Spares or similar. Or buy from Clark and match each rubber needed (bar windows, those I'd buy from Rare Spares, etc...), for the bailey channel (where the window slides up and down) you can use a generic fit without the chrome edging and save shitloads. I did almost all my windows with the generic type for what it would cost to do one with the correct type. Its your call though as you need to choose the ones that best fit from Clarks or take in examples.

As for fitting, you can do it yourself, even the windows but its not fun!
Panel beater would probably be the better choice if you are paying to get it done as its something they would do on a regular basis. Just not on old cars. Personally I'd suggest getting all non moving glass fitted professionally and do all the doors, bailey channels yourself. After all if you get stuck you can just ask here and get a whole heap of help!

mate try bill thompsons in melbourne, he sells the same product as rare spares, but seems to be slighty cheaper, he will also post free.

I just bought a rubber kit for my fe ute, and he still was the cheapest.

WARNING.... Done expect all new rubber kits to seal the car 100%, in wet weather expect water drips here and there.

Hi,
I priced rubbers for the outer door seals on my wagon and Clark Rubber was more expensive than rare spares (to my surprise). I bought the ones from rare spares of course.
Cheers,

rubbers...

Post by mattymartin »

thanks team,

wow, mixed reviews... clarks or rares ?

some questions that would make my decision making process a little easier...

Q. rares rubbers... has anyone who used these been disapointed

Q.clarkes...has anyone who used these been disapointed

Q.and would you use them again on another project...

as i really dont want a car that has leaks & the less rattles the better...

SIGS, where do you live... i'm wondering if that may affect pricing, are you happy with the result & did you fit them your self...

DR, aren't all bailey channel for ek's the same... i was wondering if you had remembered the ones that you purchased... where they from clarks, did they have a code or some sort of disciption...(cause i like the sound of 4 for the price of one & besides there's enough chrome already). as far as installation i'm going to take you advice, (as you haven't let me down yet), let the pro's do the fitted windows and i'll give the rest a crack...

RETRO, did you get qoutes from clark's as well, if so & this bill thompsons was still cheaper...

thanks guys

Some answers for ya Matty. Also try Scott's in Oakleigh.

I personally have used all of them, but Clarks for only Bailey channel. Doors, boot, screens are all Rares. As for the bailey channel take some with you and find the ones that match closey (I think mine were similar to HQ/Mazda) Will have a look over the weekend on the bit I have left). There are two sizes on the frames and vent windows. Salvage whatever you can on the car now if its worth it.

Wouldn't hesitate to use any of the above again. But fitting them does require some patience and use Loctite Prism (sticks like shitto a shoe!!!!).

HI MATTY
Like DR i used clarks for all door
rubbers and bailey channel its heaps cheaper
then any other repro company rubbers

You can get repro rubbers for ek fb through
clark rubber also but you will pay the same
as rare spares this is what sigs may have priced

the ones i got were just matched up off the shelf
you just buy it by the metre so take a piece
of inner and outer door rubber when you go there
and you should be able to find; of the shelf something
the same or similar that fits well same with the bailey
channel non chrome type as for building another project
using clarks rubbers yes; saved me a heap of $ and are a
good product; have high pressured washed the car and no
leaks :) jay

Hi Matty,

I used Rares rubbers and found plenty of leaks to start with until I used
their "Magic Rubber" spray (I think thats what its called)-worked a treat!Only get occasional dribble now even with pressure wash. found windscreen rubber to be funny fit but could be my screen-bought a new laminated one after original broke and it has a flat spot at about right eyeball height!
