EK Inner door handle and tailgate outer not working

Post by DieHard »

Good afternoon!
Getting back to work on Monty today after a Christmas hiatus.
I replaced all the door and tailgate seals and now I cannot open the rear tailgate the handle just spins around. Also the drivers inner door handle same problem. Have I damaged parts because the seals were tight? It did take a lot of effort to open the door from inside after the seal replacement- and the inner handle got worse each time til now. Now won’t open at all.
Any guidance appreciated.

I speculate you have stripped the splines on the inner door handle. They are die-cast and known to fail over time. You may be able to make it work if so, by pushing hard against the centre while operating the lever.

The door handle won't be an issue , they are readily available. The tailgate handle may be a problem, they are hard to get =expensive.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Do you think its the inner gear that’s stripped?

If you remove the inner plate on your tailgate you should be able to see the inner workings of the release mechanism.
On the drivers door just pop the handle off and see if it's buggered inside or if the spline on the mechanism is gone. 99% of the time it will be the handle itself that is the problem.

Because they are prone to failure i suppose, they are rare. That's not withstanding that the same part goes from FE to WB (panel van) afaik.

The outside tailgate handle looks exactly like an FX boot handle. From the outside. Is it a 1/4" square drive on the inside?

Time for the master parts catalog. But FX boot handles are also very thin on the ground.
Edit: answered my own question. FX boot handle (the type that doesn't let the key out when unlocked) 7402440. FX boot handle (the type that does let the key out when unlocked) 7407658. FE wagon/van lower tailgate handle 7411267.

7411267 is listed for FE EK 219, 229, 2104, EJ HR 2104 as I read it although there appears to be a typo. Lower ute van handle is sharing the same number.Image

I would say yes. At least you should make every effort to do so, as they are bloody expensive. I would take it to a locksmith.

It looks
Like a grub screw may do the trick

So drill and tap a small hole ? Add a grub?
