HR front, LH torana disks

Hey all,

Another query, have found out a bit more on this front end fitted to the wagon. It’s apparently HR w/ Castlemaine rod shop adapter plates to LH SLR5000 disk brakes. Have been thru the boxes of bits and found a couple of possible candidates for hardware but not quite sure. Spacers are needed to get the caliper over the disk (which I’ve located) but not sure about the spacer plates (“c” shaped ones).. The bolts in the middle of the pics are the only ones of close length, but if I put the plates on with the spacers the grip length doesn’t seem enough? The backing plates pictured I figured are not for this installation… does the “after installation” pics look right to the guys with experience with this setup? I’ve also read on here some people have had issues with clearances? All help appreciated.

Cheers

Melly

do you know if the sutbs have been modified to fit?

https://www.rodshop.com.au/lh-uc-disc-c ... stub-axles

kit shows the spacers required after machining above.

I'm using the CRS kit, though with Mitsi disks on my meth-monster project. Info on fitment starts here on page 9:

Cheers that’s the kit alright- no spacer plates in there… dunno gpi how would I tell without taking the hub off- spins freely all looks stout?

Cheers Harv very informative as usual and good feedback from Rob also- here’s final install at full lock seems to work? Pretty close looks like it’s been notched out?
Cheers

Hi Melly;
The stubs have been modified, the position where the top countersunk bolt goes in has been machined back to allow the plate to bolt up flat.
The stubs you have are HR drum brake stubs, because disc brake stubs are like unicorns now days they came up with modifying the drum brake ones.

I modified a pair some time ago when I started building my Ute, I use VP calipers and rotors on those ones and can't remember if I had to use spacers or not.

Sorry O can't be of more help, maybe a phone call to CRS  but the last time I did they weren't much help I'm afraid.

Melly,

The backing plates are LC-J Torana. The "C"-shaped spacers look to me like they're from HG with 5/8" brake discs.

I've had no experience with the CRS adaptors on HR drum steering knuckles. But my memory of HR disc steering knuckles tells me that the caliper mounting faces are about co-planar with the steering arm mounting faces. This isn't the case here with the CRS adaptors, so I'm guessing you'll need to use spacers to get the calipers in correct alignment. Looking back over the photos: yes, this is what you've done.

It's best to check the caliper-to-disc alignment with new pads. Which you are also doing. But it appears to me that the caliper "saddle" is sitting too close to the inside face of the disc, because there's a lot more slide visible on the inboard side than on the outboard side. And as your pads wear, that situation's only going to get more pronounced.

Maybe if you took a close look at the machined slides on the calipers for wear marks, you'd get an estimate of where the caliper's supposed to sit on the "saddle". Checking the dimensions against a real-live LH Torana would be useful . . .

Rob

Thanks Neil/ Rob, helps make sense of what’s going on here- checked the CRS site and reckon that’s the right config, but you’re right Rob that clearance is tight on the inboard side. I’ll keep an eye out for something to cross check.

Cheers
