Nick's 62 EK Ute

I have been a member for a few years but this is my first post.
I just purchased this original ute a few weeks ago and will be starting a tidy up soon.
Still not sure if Ill do a full respray or just do enough to get it on the road. It will need a new tail gate as this one was taken off many years ago and thrown around a bit.
Very solid old girl with only a bit of surface rust where the paint has worn through from use.

Looks like a great ride mate. A decent panel beater will fix that tail gate for you. Good luck with the project.

Welcome to the forum Nick , nice pickup there mate , they are getting harder and harder to find in that condition ! Personally I reckon you would be mad to paint that , if it was mine I would clean it up as best you can , get the tailgate repaired and blended and drive the wheels off it

Agree with Blacky Nick. That is a solid looking survivor. I would say that tailgate is not original. It looks to be from an FE or FC. The badge gives it away. It is pretty common and my FB ute was the same deal. Apart from the badge, the only other difference is in the side latch mounting plates. If it is FE FC they will have four screws rather than two for the FB EK, and only a total nerd will notice this.
Post up the body, subframe and engine numbers if you will. Looks like Honey Beige, or could it be Tuscan Yellow. I’ve seen the green and grey interior with Tuscan. My honey beige ek van had blue and grey interior.
Look forward to following what you do with this. Great find.

Hi Nick,
That is a great looking ute, I looked for one nearly 20 years ago and couldn't find an example as good as this.
Have fun and enjoy the old girl !

Hey Nick,
Welcome to the forum mate. Good score with the ute. I wouldn't paint it either, just a tidy up and use it. I like the deep dish stock rims they are cool. Keep us updated with pictures and progress, we love Utes
Regards
Stephen

Thanks for the welcome guys.
I'm starting to think that I should just do a tidy up rather than a full resto but I will wait to strip a few items first and see where that leads.
This is the story I got from the guy I bought it of,
History of Jimmy 62 EK ute
Jimmy was purchased new from Kent Motors in Narrandera by James Clare a sheep / wheat farmer from Sandigo
Jimmy's neighbour and second owner Arthur told me it was common practice to purchase with 12 months rego and return for services during this time, then let rego go because it only travelled locally around the Sandigo district or on the farm.
When James retired and sold the farm, Arthur purchased Jimmy at the clearing sale. Jimmy was brought out for each summer's harvest to help. At some point the tailgate was in the way of loading equipment so it was thrown in the scrap heap on the farm!
When I purchased Jimmy,
Arthur told me he had " done the rings and bearings and freshened him up" at sometime. The Original tarp was found folded up under the seat it must have been in the way from day one so put aside and forgotten.
pic attached is just before I picked him up and Arthur pressure cleaned Jimmy.
All the best with the next chapter Nick

I haven't even tried opening the tonneau up yet, will try in the next few days.
I removed the rear floor and seat over the weekend and removed a few kilos of dirt. Real happy with how solid it is with no rust holes anywhere yet.

I have taken a few more things apart and I am finding a heap of dirt everywhere so I have decided that I will be taking the ute apart fully including motor gearbox and diff. The dirt on the table came form the front windscreen rubbers and surround while the muck in the bucket come out of the radiator.
