Tonneau cover

Post by 62ekute »

Does everyone with a ute have a tonneau cover? If so what have you found to be easy to throw back? what looks good? do you also have something to tie down loads?

The ropes on mine rub on the paint (not a problem at the moment)...when I get around to preparing for paint back there, I want to have an idea of what I'm going to attach so I know which holes to fill

I’m going with lift-A-dots, which was what was on it from new I believe. Yeh nah don’t like the bungee hooks or press studs. There is a very affordable product on eBay that Neil Firecracker has used and recommended to me. I don’t really like the high ridge they came-out with and will go for a flat tarp if I can.

Graces ute came with the hooks too. I kept them, as I don’t have the welding skill to fill them in. it has lift-a-dots on the leading edge.

The tonneau is the same shape as an original. The loops are built in, and do not rub on the paint like the old bungee cord. Easy to roll back to put stuff into the tub.

For tie-down, consider screwing flush swinging D-hooks (from Bunnings) into the timber floor. I also made a rub mat out of heavy holey rubber, which stops stuff sliding around (Bunnings has that on a roll).

Hi Patrick;
This is the same as the one that I purchased, this is actually the photos from their add on evil bay and the same as the one Blacky has or very similar looks like I'm going to fit it this weekend with some help from Keith my paint Guru.

I really like the flat look it is attached with press studs.

I really like a ute-with-fins that it is attached to 8).

thanks, a couple of good options there - looks like they are readily available, so I guess I can fill in all the holes and drill new ones for whichever option I end up with.

how about not having a cover? I see there's some drain holes/hoses

No need for a cover... many, perhaps most, utes dont have them. They are handy though when you want to move stuff around in the rain, or duck down to the shops.

I missed that full sedan rear bumper in the finned ute... your right, must make the spare interesting to get out. I like the length of those rear quarters though... not quite el Camino or Ranchero long, but longer than standard.

Lift a dots were the standard issue I believe with the hooks coming later - I got some vinyl from states and plan to have a few made up - this one is original ImageImage

Just thought I would update this thread with the results of me fitting my cover.
Unfortunately my cover did not fit, it was slightly too short, now this is not the fault of the company making them as it turns out, the Ute in the photos that I posted, people can see that the rear has been modified, and the tailgate was welded up, this Ute was used to make the template and the tailgate or lack of it is straight across from one side to the other.

Dave at Tonnos n Stuff said his measurement inside the tub from front to back in the middle is 1467 mm this was as I said based on the Ute in the photo when I measured mine it was 1488 mm, he said that in the future he would ask for the measurement before making the cover.

Funny thing is that he said he has sold 9 of them and nobody else has said it didn't fit, I've had to post the one I have back and then get the other one here at additional cost I assume.

His product is good quality I'm not knocking him just want to make people aware before they buy if they do.

I just looked at the pink Ute again and the tailgate isn't welded up so not sure why it is straight across.

The pink ute looks like it could of been a wagon back end put on a ute? The tailgate seams to slope forward more than normal?

Thanks for the update Neil. You made me go down and fit my gate so I could measure, inside 1480mm. Rob may be correct in the wagon theory. My gate has quite limited 7mm curve across the transom, possibly due to the reskin, being a simple 2d curve rather than compound, pulling the curve out of the frame or inner panel to an extent. Even if it were dead straight the measurement would be 1474mm.

Thanks for being the guinea pig mate. It could still be an accumulation of variations in tolerance, coupled with the straight tailgate. I’m going to ring them now before they re-think the price.
