I bought a pair of FB/EK lower front guard rust repair sections from Rares a while back for an FC restoration project. The FE/FC repair sections were unavailable at the time. Now FE/FC and FB/EK rear doors below the beltline are identical, the front door lower skins are identical; the profile of the front door/front guard cutline would be identical at least up to the waistline. The profile of the lower front guards immediately forward of the sills (that is, the bit that rusts out) I'm guessing is the same. The front wheel arch shape is subtly different between FE/FC and FB/EK, but I'm guessing that the difference only starts happening above where the guard "lip" flows into the sill.
Question for the FB/EKers: What is the difference between FE/FC and FB/EK lower front guard repair sections? I would have thought they'd be one size fits all.

Can't help you Rob... I was aware of the rear doors - the "Hughes Bros" (restorers) put me onto that when I purchased my Frantz filter from them back in 1977.... they told me the arch of the quarter window frame was different, but could be cut and rounded to suit an FB/EK.. I don't know if this is correct, or if the rest of the frame is the same.
At that time, they had done the Victa mower (first project) and the grey/blue 48.215... they were working on the twin metallic green EH prems when I was there at that time... on one, they were gold plating the metal fuel and hydraulic lines...
If I'm not mistaken, some of that collection is now in the Echuca Holden museum...?
I was not aware of the lower front door panel being the same... thanks.
I suppose, we need to learn of someone who has both rusted out dog-leg front sections in an FE/C plus FB/EK.. or - check with the Rares catelogue and note if the repair sections have identical listing numbers...

Bit of a hijack but...if you are using 1k primer, are people applying filler over the primer or onto bare metal as was the case in the old days in pre- epoxy primers?

No filler over 1k Brett. Metal prepped bare metal or 2k.

Brett - I've made all the combinations with filler..... from plastering it to really scruffed up sound shiny steel - to applying it over primer in very thin layers...
I'm happy to say, I haven't had any of it fall out or crack away as yet...
My current practice is to apply reo filler to bare shiny steel and then a finer filler... 1K etch then acrylic primer.... then if I find canyons - plastic fine filler again then more acrylic primer until I get the guide coat to wipe entirely off after just one or two rubs of paper....
Yet to play with 2K primer.. but undoubtedly will post up pix and the usual novel when I set to having a go at it.
Spray painting window has closed here for winter now... will look at a little project late Spring/early Summer... when it opens up again...

I'm confused now. I bought four lower door skins for this FC project from Rare Spares, and they're all labelled FE-FC. I'd have to see what part numbers they list for FE/FC and FB/EK.

Looking forward to your research, Rob... my guess is that it's "one size fits all" scenario...
Rares will only tool up for something if there is a needed market to keep vehicles on the road...
My suspicion is that if two panels are similar.. they would view that the restorer will have sufficient skills to "fit" them ....

And yes they generally need a bit of a tweak in any case.

Odd. I just took a look on the Rare Spares site. Half door skins are only listed for FE-FC, although the rears will suit FB/EK, and I'm almost certain that the front half-door skin will also suit FB/EK. And lower front guard repair sections are only listed for FB/EK.
I'll have to lay the FB/EK repair sections on my FC front guards and see how closely they fit - or more to the point - where to make the cut so they do fit.

My suspicion is that the curve of the lower front door panel could be made to fit an FB/EK - are they the same length (not height)?... they would more than likely pull to following the frame shape.. as long as there is enough length to them.
It only goes to reason, that if the lower guard repair sections are similar - and the lower door section of the rear door is identical - the "bit" in between should follow the same curvature.... my logic, anyway...
