WRAY T96 SUPERCHARGER refurb and install

Thought I would create a separate thread to document this process - hope thats ok

Harvs Wray anecdote will give a lot more detail on the history of Wray - this is more on my journey for the rebuild and fitting to the EK ute

I purchased a T96 Wray from a fellow enthusiast who had it among his collection but had no need for it - it had not been run for a very very long time and bearings and vanes were worn out and we later discovered it had been dropped on the pulley end and had a bent shaft - bummer
This is how I bought it minus the SU carb ImageImageImageImage

Not knowing anything about these units or how they go on a grey I started chatting to Harv who put me in touch with Fred Radman in SA who had obtained the remnants of the J.G.Wray tooling and plans to preserve them and is a talented machinist himself.
After some discussion Fred was excited to take on the refurb project for me and I sent the unit over for evaluation.

As expected the unit was pretty good but pretty worn out and the discovery of the bent shaft nearly ended the project right then and there but I bit the bullet and committed to getting this thing running on the ute.

Fred started by machining the end caps and getting the body cleaned up and honed inside and it came up pretty well ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

The rotor was a complete remake which is a tricky bit of machining with a pressed steel shaft into a peice of billet aircraft ally then machined shaft and slots - kudos to Fred ImageImageImageImageImageImage

For the drive Fred recommended a twin belt same profile as the fan belt to keep it looking period and symmetric so we took a powerbond harmonic balancer and machined it to take a stock pulley of desired size which looks ok ImageImageImage
To fit this on I hit the first couple of hurdles
1. The fan would be in the way of the twin belts so it has to move forward towards the radiator at least 20mm - going to do this with a spacer - easy peasy
2. Now the fan moved forward The radiator gets in the way so plan is to modify the top radiator support to allow radiator to move forward 20mm - I will then have the four mount tabs on radiator cut off and new ones welted on that move rad forward 20mm and upwards 10-15mm so it clears the stone tray base plate - I will then cut the vertical lip off the stone guard so rad can sit on top of stone guard - there is actually a little recess in the stone guard that follows the line of the radiator so done neatly this wont even look out of place - just have to check clearance of rad cap to bonnet before making those cuts but think there is enough clearance not to be an issue

Another issue was space for the S/C as it would interfere with battery - SO I made the first sin in cutting out the battery tray and relocating battery to the tub behind cabin under the floor - seams happy there and I can still charge via the alternator positive and large body earth on front clip - works a treat with no heat build up anywhere i could find Image

It's going to look very cool I'm sure Rob. Bet you've outlaid a few bills to get there. Good effort keeping it looking period.

Relocating the battery is a worthwhile mod in any car even otherwise stock.

Yeah its not a cheap process but Fred is being very generous with his time - I would not be able to even attempt it without his skills and sending it to a shop would of made it completely unrealistic cost wise.

Losing the battery certainly cleans it up a bit
