Hi All
Back again ---- I have a Headlight dimmer switch in good condition but it needs cleaning so I don't have any problems down the track is there something I can wash it in to restore it clean it up so it will work for another 56 years without pulling it apart some sort of mild acid maybe

Hi,
You could try a switch cleaning product (aerosol can) which is like a solvent, evaporates quickly. I think CRC make one.

G'day Billy,

I wouldn't put acid anywhere near one of those switches  .

If it won't blow off with compressed air, give it a light brush down with a brass wire brush. The switch contacts are normally OK. The drama is that the dimmer resistance wire gets rusty over time and will not contact electrically.

Failing that, a bath in some kero may help. Keep the kero away from the knob though.

Cheers,
Harv
