VR rear end

Post by kel3629 »

Hi all

What are the pros & cons of fitting a VR commodore solid axle rear end to my EK sedan running a 202 & trimatic?
I believe you can use 2 short axles with a cut down housing and it will fit.
Is it a big job $ to get the EK diff yoke to fit and change the wheel stud pattern to early Holden
Is there any problems getting early Holden rims to fit with the rear discs
Thanks for your help

dunno about the using 2 short axles trick - your tailshaft will run off centre for a start. If you are running 13 inch rims they wont fit over the brakes , you will be up for a stud pattern change - I redrilled mine in a mill to HQ stud pattern and fitted oversize wheel studs , but that wouldnt work for early pattern as they are too different. Tailshaft is the easy bit, measure and take to Hardy Spicer or whoever and have a new one made.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

I run a cut-down VP LSD in the EK wagon. Mine was done by Pat Gardner (V6 conversions), and wasn't too dear. Blacky's right, easy to get a tailshaft made up.

You will need to run 15" wheels to clear the brakes.... hard to find 15" in early Holden stud pattern, so likely you will run Commodore wheels. Need to take into account the funny Commodore offset when setting your diff width.

Unless you want some funky rake, you then need to put 15" rims on the front. Don't know if you can get Commodore stud pattern onto a standard kingpin front end, but seriously doubt it. You can get Commodore stud pattern onto a HR front end (eg CRS sells adaptors), but it needs a fair bit of thinking to avoid fouling tierod ends... don't ask how I know.

Kelvin
Ive got a VN rear in mine.
Shaun Maccarrol (spelling?) cut it down, does a pretty neat job. He's out in the Dobson estate in shepp.
For memory it cost around 400 bucks and he cut mounts off the old diff and re welded them to the new one.- he's got a jig to keep it all straight.
Pretty much did everything but painted it
