hey, I have a 1960 FB grey motor and having fuel issues, its been with my mechanic for weeks now, he scratching his head, a lot of backfiring and slowing down when hitting hills, then picking up speed again for 20k or so , then slowing down again.
Think its the fuel pump
can I get one of those easily ? or can it be replaced with a modern one ?

Fuel pumps are readily available and cheap so it would be a good idea to change it , if it's not the problem you are only out of pocket a few dollars and an hour of your time ....

Is your car still running vacuum wipers? IF so you may need to get the fuel and vacuum pump overhauled as a unit. If you do some digging kits for either pump can be found online (ebay).
If running electric then the standard fuel pump only units are readily available. Holden six including red motor will fit the grey (glass fuel bowl type).

Sounds like the vacuum advance (Check for leaks) and the timing.
Has the timing been done off the no 1 cylinder to the front or the back?

Another thing to check is the fuel hose from the line to the pump,these can play up and give an intermittent problem. Cheers Rex
