Just had a motor completely rebuilt have not driven it yet but have had it running a few times in car stationery ( still waiting for linkages for twin carbs).

After installing motor I filled with a running in oil as I was filling I noticed oiled dripping from front of gearbox only small amount and thought strange , I rang the engine builder and was told that this is sometimes common as seal hasn't bed in yet.

Also installed a new harmonic balancer which I had to belt the living day lights out to get on which he told me was fine you won't do any harm .

I have had the motor running a few times and it is still leaking I'd say from the rear seal I'd say I'd lost about 100mls maybe a bit more

Spoke to motor builder again today and he still assures me that everything is fine just drive it and will come good.

Will it come good as i have some concerns that it won't I am driving the car to Canbera in 2 weeks and also concerned about the new clutch plate being damaged due to oil.

Am I being over concerned or is this normal.

And yes I have checked to see if leak is not coming from side plate or rocker cover.

If its a rope seal it will probably seal up. If its a modern rubber type seal it probably wont.

Had similar when I had my motor rebuilt about a year ago but at the front of motor, took it back and had it sorted.turned out the seal broke, no issues since.

Oil leaks are common on recoed motors because the seal hasn't been installed correctly .The rope seals have always been an issue, holden spent a lot of time trying to get it right Special tooling and installation proceedure was developed on the line then had to be changed when they changed the seal supplier because of the different composition of the seal.I think the engine .builder is just fobbing you off it definately WONT stop leaking I posted some photos awhile ago showing the tooling ,the seal needs to protrude 0.010 " at the but faces, use gm head stud sealer (factory used super glue in the later engines) to glue the seal in the block
