First thing to do is make sure you have a block that will accept the turbo bell-housing (trimatic & turbo blocks are different).

Turbo 400s were stronger out of the box than 350s, and the later 400s had the lock-up torque converter which some love and some hate.

Turbo 700s are 4 speed and more economical. They came in different strengths for different engines, and you'll need one from before they changed from hydraulic to electronic lock-up (or you can buy a kit to emulate the computer and frig the electronic ones).

That's about all I know. As with most questions like this you'll get people who love powerglides, swear by trimatics, or be really one-eyed about a particular Turbo series.

I'd go a rebuilt Turbo 700, but I'd have a good talk to a trans specialist first to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. Not something I'd buy off eBay.

for you jay i'de say a trimatic based on i don't think the car will get a hard time, in saying that a trimatic will take a reasonable amount of punishment
if you fall into a turbo 350 or 400 good but for you unless you have turned into a tire shredding maniac i wouldn't go looking specifically for one
as for turbo 700 good move if you find one for fuel economy, if not useing the injected motor look for a VN/VP box as the later electronic boxes are a headache you can buy the stuff to make them work but extra cost, also when it comes to the turbo 700s you will usually pay $500 to $1000 for the earlier box, which for around the $1000 you will probly get a whole VN/VP 5 litre car which will supply you motor box computer etc
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

What Mick said - you dont need a T400 - they pull about 40hp out of you motor just to drive them , 9 inch diffs are the same . A trimatic if you are going 3 speed or a T700 for 4 speed , T700 would be my personal choice , a bit more upfront costs but a better setup . Commodore diffs are plenty strong enough , and if you buy a complete donor car you can use the entire braking system , motor and box, wiper motor , etc.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.
