Fuel pump not working. Could I have installed it wrong?

The EK is in the build stage but I'm so keen to run the engine to keep it ticking over and for a bit of a milestone.
Red 3.3 from a VB. I have everything connected but the fuel isn't drawing from the temporary tank. Engine fires when fuel poured down the carby. I have a about 0.5m of hose to a fuel container on the floor. (I'm reading other guys get engines cranking from a stubby of fuel)
The motor originally had an AC pump, but while out of the car the glass bowl broke and so I put in the carter pump I bought from a swap meet.
Basically... is it possible to install it wrong or is the pump a dud? Any other way of testing?

Thanks for any comments.
Ted.

The pump probably can't draw the fuel uphill from the container on the floor. Not many electric fuel pumps would be able to (prime themselves, that is).

Thanks. I'll try tomorrow with the container elevated above the pump. Perhaps even pour some fuel down the hose.
It is a mechanical pump though, not electric. I'd thought cranking the engine enough should have drawn the fuel in.

Also a good idea. I removed the hose on the inlet side and then held my finger on the pump while cranking it over. Didn't feel any suction.
Perhaps I start again.
