cooling system?

Was just wondering what engine cooling system you guys run, my fb relies on the cool air running through the grill to cool everything, last week i got caught in traffic and the temp went up to 110c but as soon as i got running again it went back down to 80c, im worried that if it happen again for longer i could blow a gasket or something, was thinking of installing a radiator fan but wanted to see if anyone else had this problem or a solution.

Thanks guys
Zac

Get your radiator re-cored make it a 3 core  .
Get rid of the gage too, too much info.
If you just relied on the idiot light would it have come on?

When you say it relies on air movement , do you mean it doesn't have a fan at all ????

Trev: I know I'm probably worrying about nothing, I've only had her for 2 months I'm still in the over protective stage with her.

Blacky: there is no radiator fan at all or anything that kicks in on idle.

The car has to have some sort of fan. Its meant to cool the car down when idling around or sitting.
You will cook it if you keep using it in traffic.

That's my point mate, I never even took any notice until I saw the temp rise the other day :? I generally never get caught in traffic and only had he out a few time since purchase, but I need to get this sh@t sorted before I do some damage, ill get a pic up tomorrow so you all can see what I'm talking about, I'm not much of a revhead which is pretty obvious, But I know that something's not right.

ok so there is a fan , so now i'm stumped, radiator is full, hoses have no cracks or leaks that i could see, the only thing i could think of is maybe the fan could be on backwards and is pulling air not pushing, is that even possible? so no idea why it would be running hot on idle, any theories?

Try changing your thermostat. If that doesnt work get the radiator flushed.
Trying to stop a car overheating can be a pain.
My vette gets hot in traffic and on hot days.
Its an absolute misery on those occasions. Ive replaced everything including rebuilding the engine.. now i only drive it when its a cool day or when i can just drive on open roads.

Hi Zac

Is there coolant in the radiator or just straight water?

Zac. How's your water pump? They do corrode with time, I'm seeing one in your pics which looks like it has been replaced at some stage (not red). Also, like Stewart says, coolant or water. If its been running water only for a long time, the old red will have made a lot if rust. This rust will catch in the tops of the radiator tubes. This will dramatically reduce efficiency of the radiator. Sometimes, you can see poor radiator flow by free revving the motor and seeing if the bottom hose collapses a bit, indicating the water pump us sucking on a blocked radiator. A reverse flush will only do a partial job, and the best thing to do is see a good radiator bloke to get a re-core. It would be about 300 bucks well spent.

Check the thermostat, I still know people who "think" cars run cooler without one

The mechanical fan on your waterpump should be coping alright if the radiator is clean and not leaking, so my money would be on the thermostat.

It's coolant in the radiator, but I think ill just take her in and have a look over! If anyone is going to the meeting on the 13th in Sydney I'm going to attend, I'd be more than happy to pop the hood and let you have a look

Totally agree! You need a thermostat.

I'd start with getting the core checked/flushed and see what the thermostat is doing.

I run an engine fan and 3 core radiator and have no issues at all in traffic (daily!).
