Is there a special tool, apart from a hammer, to get the pitman arm back onto pitman shaft?

Do you mean the ball part into the tube drag link?
If so, remove the split pin and nut from the end and install the ball then re-assemble when its in.

Stewart, you shouldn't have to hit it back on with a hammer. It sounds like you may have either miss matched pitman arm or steering sector shaft in the box.
The box shaft and pitman arm should have corresponding splines (tapered on the shaft) with 4 x master splines. This is to ensure that the pitman arm goes on in only position. Check you manual if you have one, with the box set up in the straight ahead position the arm should go on at approx 89 degrees or so (pretty much straight ahead towards the front of the vehicle. Once on its just a matter of pulling it up with the nut and tightening to the correct tension.

Yes have seen the 4 master splines but don't think the box was set up in straight ahead position. Many thanks guys.
