Ute Rear end rattle

Post by Beauii60 »

Hi All,
My EK Ute has a low speed rattle from the rear end that has got me beat.

It happens all the time at low speed independent of the road surface.

At first I thought it was the tailgate links but wrapping them in foam quickly eliminated them.

It's not rear wheel bearings (new), UJs (new), exhaust system (lots of clearance and securely mounted), fuel/brake pipes (new and securely mounted), spare wheel well contents (still there when empty), shocker mounts (new), spare wheel well door (no slop in lock or hinges), tray floor boards (good nick and the screws are nice and tight).

I've jumped in the back and had a mate drive but couldn't hear a thing.

I recently drove an FB Ute and it had exactly the same noise.

There's not much in the back of these things so there's little left to rattle.

Any advice/comments appreciated.

Tony

G'day Tony,
It could be the rear shockys rattling internally.
Hope this helps,

Hey guys,
Thanks for the gags and advice.

I had a bad rattle in the front that, although I knew the radio blanking plate to be loose, didn't make the rattle connection.

I think the last thing to try is to run it without the rear shocks.

I have removed them and fully re-bled them and they seemed ok on the bench.

I'll let you know.

Cheers

Turn the radio up

Seriously though theres nothing worse than not knowing what it is

Funny thing is once you know its this or that rattling you tend not to be as worried about it

Can you describe the rattle? is it going around corners? what speed? engine revs? what gear? up hill? down hill? without or with a load? is it a dull rattle or a vibration? something in the inner rear tub area? that cap on the fuel tank sender? the fuel tank?rubber seal around fuel filler in good nick? light tight lenses tight? number plate bent? does it have a towbar? Those ideas will keep you busy for a while!

The only thing I can think that has not been checked is the dust cover on the front bearing of the diff, just behind the yoke.
These do have a habit of coming loose from time to time and make a fair old racket for something so small and tinny

Keep us informed if ya solve the mystery

this is a true story
around 2 years ago my mate bought a hx ute , v8 blah blah nice original thang ,it drove tight .... but it had this bloody noise in the left hand side , it sound like a rattle sqweek ,we changed the chassis bushes , checked gearbox mounts as the noise came from centre of the cab , for nearly 6months we would regularly check the ute over ,nothing ..so one day my mate was trying to tighten the passenger door striker bolt on the pillar ,he rounded the allen key head on it and decide to take it off , the plate holdin it dropped way low so he took the plastic air vent off and in there was a small " heinz spagetti tin, the tiny ones ) ..it had $2500 grand in it!! ! the noise/rattle gone ...my mate still hasthis ute and is doin a ground up rebuild on it
all very 100% true :)
ya dont know performance till ya have driven a grey motor with a hydramatic....[/i]
