starting an engine after years...

Hi All,
Had a quick look for any threads on the topic, but just wanted to know on your thoughts of turning over an engine I have never started before and may have been sitting around for a few years. Do I do a coolant flush and oil change? will parts be seized? i want to hear her purr but too scared to turn the ignition...
All advice will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Jarvo

Jarvo,
The stuff below has worked for me:
a) air cleaner off and check for any suprises (loose bits, wasp nests) down the carb throat.
b) drain fuel tank and float bowl to remove old fuel. Refill with fresh fuel.
c) plugs out, squirt of oil in each cylinder. Leave plugs out for now.
d) change oil.
e) pop dizzy cap.
f) turn over by hand (use fan) and check for free turning. Check that points are opening and closing, listen for fuel pump wheezing, pull rocker cover cap off and check rocker gear is moving (timing gear not stripped).
g) clean plugs and put back in,
h) drain coolant, flush both ways with garden hose, refill.
i) turn over with starter motor, checking that oil pressure idiot light goes out.
j) refit dizzy cap.
k) Fire up.
l) Grin like a loon.
You're right though, best done outdoors.
Cheers,
Harv

One thing harv left out. Wind the engine on the starter motor with thelugs out to get the oil pressure up and check if the oil is getting to the top end.
Probably wouldt hurt to do a compression test as well.

Jarvo, whilke you're at Harv's point f) - rocker cover off - check that all valves are opening & closing properly. If not, squirt diesel liberally around the stems, leave overnight and check valve movement again in the morning. Old motors have a habit of sticking valves when sitting around for too long. I don't think a stuck valve can damage the piston crown on a grey but it can sure as hell bend the pushrods. Cheers, Steve

Hey Fingers,
I always thought it was a red motor but then I had a good look at it and realised it's actually a 3.3 blue motor, does this change anything?
Cheers

like the guys say pull the plugs out ...pull the rocker cover off .....pull the dissy cap off..check the oil, make sure its got plenty and it looks clean if not do a quick oil change . fill up the radiator..squirt a little oil into each cylinder ...pull the air filter off and check that theres no surprises .. like ant or wasp nests etc .I have seen plenty of carbys full of mud from either ants or wasps ...turn it over by hand first ..if it turns easy and no noises ... then crank the bejesus outta it and make sure the tappets are all doing the right thing ..and oil is coming up thru the valve gear ...replace the rocker cover .....make sure the rotor button is turning ....put a spark plug onto one of the plug leads and earth out the base of the plug on an earth......... crank it over again make sure theres a good strong spark ...if all this is good make sure the spark plugs are in good nick ...then put the plugs back in ..check the dissy cap for cracks and arc marks if it looks good put it back on ... check the carby that its not flooding ..you will tell by excess fuel coming out of the bottom of the carby ..try tapping the needle and seat..if that doesnt stop it pull the needle and seat out and give it a clean..give the accelerater a couple of quick pumps to see if theres fuel up you will see a squirt coming out of the accellerator jet down the middle of the carby if not check the fuel filter .and crank it over again ..recheck the carby...if that dont work pull ya carb to pieces and give it a good clean out .....reconnect the plug leads ,making sure you get the correct leads in the right firing order..if you dont know about firing order mark each lead before ya pull it off the plugs ..put a loaded fire extinguisher next to the car within easy reach ...hit the starter ..and hopefully it starts .if not try squirting a little fuel directly into the carby (about an egg cup full ) ..take note where ya put that damn extinguisher....and try again ....if no start sit back have a beer try it all again if no start then give me a call Jarvo ..........if I forgot something I,m sure someone will add to this for you........Fingers 0409253202

Fingers is spot-on correct :-
The fire extinguisher is mandatory... or at least a garden hose set on mist (not jet!) and ready to go to cool it off. I've managed to set two old vehicles (mini and a jag) alight when restarting them with the old boy... both in sheds packed full of gear

. Whoever designed the hessian potato bag sure knew how to make a good fire extinguisher

.
Kinda hard not to celebrate with amber fluid is it starts (or comiserate if it doesn't).
Cheers,
Harv.

Thanks guys,
I'm off to buy a fire extinguisher and will also have the garden hose ready.
Thanks FIngers for your offer to help, if I get stuck or if something doesnt seem right, expect a phonecall from me
Sounds like I have a bit of work ahead of me but it will all be worth it to hear her purr...
Cheers
