Plating kits

This thread may have been done before but does anyone have good info backed by experience relating to electroplating kits.

I know Jane's do a a kit - http://www.janekits.com.au

and Caswells supply good chemicals from what I have heard (consumables imported from the USA) - http://www.caswellplating.com.au plus kits

But has anyone here used any of them or other alternatives. I figure between cars, bikes and other stuff I am into it has to be better than having to lob at some dodgy electroplaters who end up losing some of you parts. To qualify I am talking zinc here. I might be foolish but not enough to think a home jigger can do decent chrome ?

Cheers

I got all my nuts n bolts and every hinge, trim clips, brackets etc done for the wagon for $100  .
Unless you can use these kits over a couple of times I'd say they are a bit pricey. Trev.

show off... :P

Dave - I've used a Jane kit...mixed results...it was probably me and not the kit.

Don't know what else is out there but doing chrome at home sounds a bit pie in the sky. Interested to see what your post comes up with though...

I have a Jane kit now, not used it yet but will be in the next couple of weeks.
Best results all seem to come from the prep. as usual. Wire brushing all parts gives the best finish by far, much better than fresh machined or blasted finished.

Dave you are welcome to try it out.

Cheers guys.

You're right Trev, if you have a few lots to do then it's off to the platers and I've done that many many times over the years, mostly to my satisfaction but I like the idea of being able to do things in house and save the leg work, plus there's the advantage of being able to do the things you usually forget to take. With the sheer volume of shit I've got to get through I reckon it will pay for itself many times over so long as the solution is looked after etc. Stanley knows how much crap I have not to mention a certain EK Jimmy who'll give the kit a work out too i reckon!

Stewart, I reckon you just need more practice. I blasted a 350 Honda engine for a bloke just before Chrissy and when he came to collect it he brought along a whole bunch of bits he had done at home and the results were amazing, He had even done black zinc which looked really good. If you want to ask him for some advice I think he would help you.

Dave, I'll take you up on that offer. I'll give you a call and come and have a look before I do the big spend, but I would say that you're on the right track and you don't do things by halves except roof height in a certain van
