Re-Tension Head

Hi All. I am after some advice / assistance in regards to retentioning a grey head. I have just put a gasket through my old grey and fired her up. I have used water (not coolant) on advice in other threads until I retention the head. My question is after how many miles should this be done and what is the process? I have been told 300 miles and then 1000 miles but would like to know what others have done.
When I say process, do I slightly loosen each head bolt and then go through the three steps of torquing or do I just go straight to the last step and torque at the tension? Many years ago I retorqued the head on a motor that will remain nameless. I was told to back off and start the process from the beginning. The dill I was, as I forgot to drain the coolant and hence buggered the new head gasket. Had to start the process from the beginning again.
By the way its not a monotorque head. Interesting the tension values that came with the gasket are different to the manual - only slightly.
Thanks
