Grey Motor Harmonic Balancer?

Replaced a leaking timing cover seal yesterday, the original seal was housed in metal (not much left internally)

A mate fabricated a puller for me worked a treat. :thumbsup:

I have a question for the grey enthusiasts out there, is there any difference between the two types of harmonic balancers on the grey motors?

Rare spare still stock both types, mine was the old type and I would prefer the red motor type.

Also I didn't notice till yesterday that my radiator is not original, past owner went to all the trouble of welding spacers in? go figure.

Like the look of the that's in as it has a nice curved top tank. thought about some tidy up paint during, but I like the way the ute is now. 8)

Yep mine is the front one. looks good in the ute, may be contributing to me running in th high 90's in hot weather as it a bit smaller

Just noticed my safety thongs in the pic :lol:

New Balancer in & back on the road, (no leaks). :D

Gave all the bits a once over with the rattle can.

Had a play with the Mothers metal polish and power ball, on some of the bright work and the ally strips I bought for the cargo strips. :thumbsup:

With a quick wet & dry they will polish up a treat.

My car still has the original style with the big lip on the front. However it is really loose on the shaft and you can move it back and forward with a large screwdriver. Im going to take it out, shouldnt need a removal tool. Any ideas what went wrong with it. I havent touched it, it is how I bought the car

the whole pulley is loose on the shaft. the only thing holding the assembly on the shaft is the fan belt it would appear. I reckon I can take it off with my hands once the belt is removed

So the newer type (without the large weight on the front) available from places like Rare Spares, is OK to replace the old type and I don't need to buy two separate pieces and rivet/screw them together?

Yes, the newer type ones look more like a red motor style balancer.

Thanks Blacky. Since I took it off and cleaned all the crud off it, there is some movement and also had a speedy sleeve on it in the past, I thought it needs a new one.

The Rare Spares harmonic balancers are a PowerBond unit. There are three distinct units available:

1. HB17BN - this is the "narrow belt" (11A metric automotive belt) balancer to suit the majority of grey motors (FE through EJ). It was redesigned by PowerBond to eliminate the central 1 1/8”-12 UNF thread cut in the centre bore to accept a puller tool, replacing it with three 3/8"-24 UNF holes on a 2 13/16” (71.44mm) PCD similar to the red/blue/black motor harmonic balancer.
2. HB1049N – identical to the balancer above, but designed for the "wide belt" (15A metric automotive belt) FX/FJ pulleys.
3. HB17AN – red motor balancer.

The two grey balancers are different centre bore to the red. No home-riveting needed on any of them - pull them off and tap them on in one piece, being wary not to butcher (or lose) the woodruff key.

Can you tell I've ben playing with supercharger pulleys lately :oops: :lol: ?

Correct. PowerBond Balancer. Part number is HB17B-N and box says FJ to EJ. The 11A fan belt fits nicely. I just needed confirmation that it was correct harmonic balancer as it was different and reading this thread I still wasn't sure.

Thanks for info that I don't need the special tool anymore so wont have to find one to borrow again.

've had the rivets wear and loosen the harmoninc. It may just need a few whacks with the hammer to tighten the pulley up on the the harmoninc balancer.
