educated guess says you have a trimatic

i've always thought it is a trimatic, but thats based on an assumption. can you tell by looking at it? whats the difference in the way they look?
and does anyone know if i can get a lokar type shifter for a trimatic if thats what it is? other option i'm considering is how hard is it to reinstate the column shift? considering orinal would have been manual and now its auto etc. all the linkages in the column are there but shifter gone and linkages gone. Anyone done this

Just doing this now.
First check what side the shift shaft comes out of the box, you will need it on the right for a column shift.
Then you will need an auto column.
Then find some linkages that will reach from your column to the auto, pretty simple really.

I'm pretty sure with the Lokar shifter you can use any 3 speed one that is meant for the TH200, you might just need to adapt the mounting to what you need.

When I bought my B&M Quicksilver many years ago it came with a lot of brackets and linkages, of course being a US Shifter a Trimatic wasn't listed on the box but with minimal messing around I got it all working. The main thing is to get the shift points on the shifter matched to the trans properly, I did this by having it all hooked up bar the split pin that held the cable linkage in the gearbox linkage. Started with the box in park, lined up the cable linkage (adjustable on a thread), then test fitted every gear in turn, had it sorted by the third gearbox linkage

you can buy the correct gearbox bracket and selector linkage to suit right or left shift trimatic gearboxes when using B&M etc shifts

Marty,

Quick and easy way to identify them is to take a look at the oil pan shape:
Image
Traumatic
Image
Hydramatic
Image
1 Aluminum Powerglide
2 TH200 (Metric), TH200C (Metric)
3 TH250, TH250C, TH350, TH350C, TH375B
4 TH375C, TH400, TH475, 3L80, 3L80HD
5 TH200-4R
6 TH700-4R, 4L60, 4L60E
7 4L80E
(these last 7 are a crap-load less likely to be hanging off the back of a grey or red, but not unheard of, especially the Powerglide).

Cheers,
Harv.

torque wrench

Cruzn is right, looks like a "clicky" torque wrench. The Traumatics have a "band" that needs adjusting (normally adjusted every time you drop the oil and change the filter). The band is adjusted to a torque setting in inch/pounds, not the normal foot/pounds (or Newton/metres) you see on most torque wrenchs. This means you would need a small, inch/pound torque wrench - you can get them in Australia, just not as common as a typical foot/pound one that you can get from Repco/SuperCheap etc. I can't rember the torque setting off hand (I'm on the road at the moment and the manual is sitting on the bench at home) but it's around 15-30 inch/pound.
