celica 5 SP what flywheel and clutch??

Post by reddo »

Hi

Just bought a 5 speed conversion off ebay.
It came with a modified flywheel...
That is .....it has most of the metal taken off the clutch side...
That is... its been cast like that with just the swept area for the clutch plate to drive on and the 4 (?) mounting / screw holes for the pressure plate on the same plain /thickness.

I was always under the impression that you use the normal holden flywheel and pressure plate and use a celica clutch plate to suit whatever box you where using.. 23mm input or 29mm for the bigger cast iron box.

The whole set up came out of a LJ torana

Whats the go here??

sounds like it's a lightened flywheel, don't use it on a stock motor just use yor standard holden one use holden pressure plate and buy a clutch plate to suit holden motor to whatever box you have
did you get the tailshaft ? as you should be able to use this in the FB, if not you will need a yolk
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

Yup... Got the tailshaft with it.

Not keen on a lightned flywheel. The car does a lot of towing with the old vintage van on the back so .. a stock flywheel would be best.

The set up came with a "brass button "celica cltch plate which appears to be as new... and very close to the same diameter as the Holden clutch.
Will probably need to change the spogot bush to suit teh celica box.

Will pop the one out the back of the 186 that came with the conversion. Measure it and buy a new one.

Just how strong are thse alloy case / vertically split celica boxes. seems to be a lot of em offered up on ebay behind holden red motors.
Dellow website suggests they are suited to MGBs etc.. not 6 cylinder cars.

I have a recond cast iron celica box here with bellhousing to suit 253/308.
Weighs heaps more than the alloy box.... but will cost heaps to buy all the bits to set it up for the 186... Hence the purchase of the alloy box.. full conversion supplied.

yeah different spigot bush don't know if you were thinking of it but also don't use the brass button clutch, no idea about the box but if it's in ok condition i'de say it's strong enough cause it sounds like it's come from behind a hotty if it has lightened flywheel and brass button clutch :ewink:

I think from memmory a Hiace clutch plate is the best match in size to the Holden flywheel , just measure the flywheel or take it with you to buy the clutch kit.
The brass button in my mates EH is so hard to depress ,you could probably sell it off for something to go towards a new one.

Well..
I am totally commited to going aheads with the celica box.

Just ditched the bullshit reconditioned crash box i got from "Status engineering "via ebay.....
Over $600 and the bloody thing was vibrating at anything over 50 mph.
Has about 1000 miles on it and its growling in first.. shuddsering in reverse..
Soooo.... its on the back lawn.....
Panno is up on stumps.. floor is cut out to suit the 5 speed.
I bunged the bell housing and box up into place today and took a shit load of measurements for the gearbox mount and tailshaft length.

While the van is out of action i have sent a set of HR disc rotors / calipers etc off with a mate that works at a brake place to get em all lookin like new. Gunna ditch the recond drums on the front and bung on the discs with a reco booster.
All work done at mates rates.. its great having pissant mates.
Have also kicked out the old "Chrome over brass"Ambo windows in the back.

Have bought some high grade exterior 5 ply in New Zealand Oak. Might stain and clear the ply. fit the wood grain panelling and let the bro loose with some sign writing.... Nasco dealer.... Golden fleece....
"Reddos Vermin Exterminator Co.. specialising in eradicting mother-in-laws"

Have also sold off the 14"dragways and gone back to 13"X 6"steelies .. EH caps and Flappers...

It will probably get a rodeo bench seat in the make over as well..
Needs to be done before rego.. March 2012.

Just gotta stay off the piss.. and ... on the job

I shoulda just bought that smik windowless FB van in S.A for $14,000. ( see for sales)..... i hate sweat and gettn dirty.. unless there is a female involved. 8) 8) :D .
Cheers

Yo..

Conversion all finshed.
She runs sweet.

Should have done it about 5 grey crash boxes ago...
Just dont remind me about the $600 i wasted on that so called recond box out of Melbourne

Had to make a longer gearshifter ..
straightend the shifter.
cut a thread on it.
spun a locking nut down the thread .. followed by a mag wheel nut
Cut a slot in the mag nut head
insert bayonet in slot
Welded the bayonet in place..
Works perfect
Had to cut the loop pile carpet to suit the new CRS trans hump.
Used a fox skin to cover the 100mm gap..

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 040510.jpg

Used sticky pads to stop him running away when i leave the doors open. Although i think the bayonet through his melon might slow him up a bit too...

Also got stuck into the side panels to replace the old leaking ambo windows..
Here are the 2 plywood panels in place. I used double sided high density foam tape stuck to the van. The about 18 - 9mm X 8G woodscrews with staino body washers on the inside to hold the panels in place.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 040508.jpg

Just got all the HR disc brake parts back from a mate that works for a brake specialist.
new rotors. recond VH40 booster. new caliper pistons and seals. new pads, reconditioned master cyl. new short pipes from caliper to flexible hose mount points......... $100...   8) 8) 8)

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 040513.jpg

Disc brakes will be the next project. Just as soon as i find who is selling the proper rear wheel cylinders and shoes to suit the front disc set up. Mate has seen the stuff offered on ebay and he reckons it is shit,
Might gop with an adjustable proportioning valve in the rear brakes pipe. That way i can fiddle with front / rear braking percentages when towing the old caravan and car floats etc...

Plenty to do.... plenty to drink... just gotta find the time to do both.
Regards
