Popping through the carby

Post by muza »

Hi all,
Done a compression test on my grey, No.'s 1-4 all read 150 psi (sounds high??)
Got to No.5......nothing, No.6.........nothing.
Pulled rocker cover off, No.5 had a valve jammed open, think it was inlet (closest to front of car)
No.6 valves both appeared to be working fine. Same amount of movement as the other ones.
Put it all back together, fired straight up, but its popping through the carby....pop pop pop pop
Just curious as to wether the valves may not be seating properly maybe?
I'm sure there's a simple explanation to this    ......yeh right!!
ANy thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers all Muza

Right, No.5 now has 140 psi :D :D :D
No.6 still nothing
Oh and it wasn't popping before hand, just running rough as guts. Seems to run a bit smoother now, I'm guessing its now running on 5 cylinders not 4 :? :?

sounds like the No6 inlet is still open and blowing back out through the carby
can you measure the height of the valve with ref to one of the other valves to see if its completly closed or tap with hammer to try to get it to close better
otherwise you might have to remove head to check for a cracked valve or other damage
or if anyone can think of other tests ?

Thanks Robin, Having a chat to my very 'HELPFUL' brother, telling him about it and he says "oh dear........I took a push rod out of No.4.........did you put it back in?" HOW THE HELL WOULD I PUT IT BACK IN WHEN I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS OUT!!!!! :x :x :x :x
Guess what, put it back in and its fine
No.6 still has no compression though :( :(
Going to check out a runner today so will no doubt get that, swap them over and eventually rebuild the current one.
Cheers for the help mate, Muza
