Rear parcel shelf speaker holes pattern

I put up with the original FM radio in the FB for a long time, but 2GB finally drove me mad, and the "radio in the glovebox" option got a tick :D . I had originally mounted two rear speakers (6x9s) on the rear parcel shelf (I promise I did not cut the rear parcel shelf... someone had butchered it long ago, and the trim had long gone too). The 6x9's looked like crap though... the FB was looking more like a Zim Pirate mobile than a GMH daily driver. After some mucking around, I managed to mount the 6x9's under the rear parcel shelf, and remade the parcel board. A splash of grey vinyl, and we're looking a lot less like a Zim-mobile (I was getting worried... thought I might have been tempting a visit from Axeman!  ).

My rear parcel shelf steel has holes in it (from the historic butchering), as does the masonite board I use for the trim. The vinyl I trimmed the parcel shelf in however has no holes, and the sound quality is very muffled. I know it's never going to be perfect, but I would like to punch some "breather" holes in the vinyl to let the speaker work better. I would like the two sets of punched holes to look (roughly) original (pedantic, I know  ). I vaguely remember that the original rear parcel helves had holes punched for the optional centre speaker. Can someone post a picture of the original hole pattern please?

I can punch the holes out either with a (very) small wad-punch or one of the plier-type punches used for leatherwork - anyone had any experience doing this with either tool?

Cheers,
Harv.

Hi Harv,

Can you just turn the treble up on your head unit to compensate?

Andrew

Mmmmm... didn't know about that. Will have a play with the wireless tonight - many thanks.

Still keen for a photo if anyone has one please.

A more discrete alternative would be to use speaker cloth on the parcel shelf (no holes at all), I just got a sample card from Daleys the other day and they have greys in the range.
www.daleys.com.au
They sell to walk-ins and sell by the metre only, rolls are usually 1300mm wide so a metre should do you.

G'day Tim,

Apologies - I should have been more specific. The metal cover plate/tabs I'm familiar with, it's more the trim board that sits on top of the parcel shelf that I'm interested in.

I've assumed that where the speaker is mounted, some holes are punched into the vinyl trim covering. I have seen a couple of EK's with a single speaker mounted in the centre position (under the shelf) and have assumed that this is how the NASCO speaker mounted. The EK's I saw had a nice punched hole pattern in the trim that I was going to replicate for the two 6x9's that sit under my parcel shelf.

I could be really wrong though, and the NASCO speaker drops in from the top with a dirty great hole  , with the EK's I saw just being someones custom job.

Cheers,
Harv
