Vehicle standards bulletin 14 is out , all you guys modifying cars ,have you had a look through the new rules to see if there is anything that affects your build ?

Had a quick look through it , don't think there is anything too much to worry about , engine replacement without engineer approval is down to 20% larger than original engine though.

But only had a quick look .

The 20% increase is in power not size.

Uh oh, if I'm reading this right, it looks like hopped up grey motors may need engineer approval. Under Section 1.2 titled "MODIFICATIONS REQUIRING CERTIFICATION UNDER LA CODES", it says "Modifying the engine and engine components that results in an increase in engine power of more than 20% and/or affects exhaust emissions". If this recommendation becomes NSW law, then it looks like FBs and EKs with hopped up greys will not longer be eligible for historic rego. Seems Mr Jackson's suspicions were right...

I think the standard 138 grey is 75fwhp...so the max you can go is 90fwhp before you need engineer approval.

Yeah sorry ,should have made that a bit clearer, is increase in power or weight, don't know what you are going to drop in instead then as a 149 is 95 hp

Think NSW is the only one not locked in to these guide lines as yet , but don't quote me on that , not 100% sure about the other states

Hey Andrew, My engineers cert cost $65 bucks, not sure if that would hurt your back pocket but it made me thirsty for a weekend!

Hey Theo, really? I thought they cost around $300 here in NSW. In any case, it looks like anyone who does more than slap a set of extractors and twin Strommies on a grey needs an engineer's certificate. I'll at least need to speak to an engineer anyway. Cheers, Andrew.

I dont think many people are going to give a toss if a grey has gone from 75bhp to 90bhp.


i thought to get historic rego that the cars had to be absolutely standard anyway ?

Insurance companies might, if they can find a way to not pay a claim they will!

here they go making stoopid rules again from memory a grey is rated at 75hp but not every grey would have made that and some may have made more, so does that mean you have to get yor engine dynoed before you do any mods then do the mods and have it dynoed again and have to carry around dyno papers to prove it how would a roadside cop or other authority prove that the power has been improved by 20%+ then based on things i've read about racing cars back in the day it would be a fairly serious grey to make more than 95hp anyway
andrew the cheapest engineers reports i've heard of in NSW would be $300 but they are few and far between in general they are much dearer, but i think of greater concern to you would be the fact you may then have to fit disc brakes, approved seat belts in every seating position, heated demister, 2 speed wipers, window washers and driver and passenger side external mirrors, a bit of cost there and i'm sure a few things you don't want on a period type car

Peter, in our club the rules are FB and EK "sports" (i.e., modified grey motor) cars are eligible for historic rego. Now that such cars may need engineer's certificates, I can't see how they'll be eligible. SJ warned me that things were going this way a while back and it seems he was right...

Yeah Mick, I thought engineer's certificates were expensive. My brother's one for his RX3 was $300 and that was 15 years ago. What they will probably base an improvement of 20% in power will be from what the manufacturer published at the time the car was made. An engineer will then see triple carbs and hear a lumpy cam and say "that's more than 20%, on the tilt tray to the dyno please". Then you spend that money and it comes back 110fwhp, and he says "disc brake front end please"...

Anyway, these new regs are only in draft form and I guess I'll just have to see what happens and live with it...

There are cars with V8's on club rego in Vic, as long as they pass a RWC and are engineered.

I'll have to move to sunny Melbourne then Trev. I have family and friends there. Would the Vic club have me, dare I ask?

If this becomes law, and guys who hot up greys are forced to put in HR fronts and disc brakes, aussie 4 speed or all synchro 3 speed transmissions, etc, then the clubs are going to have to rethink the rules for the category of FB EK Sports. Thommo, parisian62 and I were talking about the rules for sports in Narrandera...
