My son's long term project is in the garage and he's obviously keen to start, great to see seeing as he's only 11. Obviously he's got a few years before he can drive it on the road, so that plan is to tackle small areas over a period of time.
Once I have cut the rust and welded new metal in, what is the best DIY way to seal up the repairs? I have heard normal primer is porous and will allow the metal to rust, I don't have the equipment (or cash) for 2 pack paints.

I used to use a rattle can of super etch - its a greeny/yellow coloured clearish stuff.

If it's out of the weather primer should be ok or maybe brush some killrust paint over it if you are not finishing it (bog etc)

The welded areas Luis did 2 years ago were primed with zinc rich weld through primer - brand name was CAM but have seen 3M and wurth - all in rattle cans. The benefit of using the weld through is once the weld is ground back any small pinholes that may be there can be welded up through the weld through primer. I've also used wattyl cold galvit in rattle can. I havnt found any rust under either the weld thru or the cold galvit.
