Lately the clutch pedal doesn't return all the way to the top, unless i flick it back with my foot.

I know people have had a similar problem and it's ended up being the flexible hose collapsing, though this feels different. the pedal comes up, then stops coming up where the free play begins. The return spring seems to be attached ok. The pushrod behind the pedal does seem to have a bit of play in it, and moves a bit when the free play stops when you depress the pedal. The pedal isnt any heavier than it used to be, and still comes up pretty quick, up to the point where it sticks. There does seem to be a fair bit of free play in the pedal ( 1 to 1 1/2 inch).

It's not causing any issues with the clutch engaging and disengaging, it just gets irritating having to flick it up each time.

Any ideas what the cause is?

Quick and easy things to check:
a) is the clutch pedal overcentre spring (under the dash) still connected, and free of any debris?
b) WD40 the clutch pedal pivot.
c) is the clutch slave cylinder return spring still in place?

Harder (pull apartm cehck and rebleed jobs):
a) collapsed clutch lines
b) gummy clutch master or slave cylinder

Thanks Harv, checked most of the easy stuff. The springs are all in place, though the pedal one doesn't seem to do much

I'll WD40 the pedal pivot and see if it helps.

It stops exactly where the free play starts, so I'm guessing (hoping) it's a spring issue

Hmmmm... made me go and look harder at mine. If it's just the freeplay thats sloppy, it should be the overcentre spring thats crook. Provided it's atill connected both ends and the pivot is free (WD'd), the spring should have a fair amount of pull.

Silly questions:
a) spring still connected up under the front edge of the dash?
b) no stray wiring floating around that is jammed into the spring coils?
c) pedal bump stop rubber not distorted or gripping the pedal somehow?

Suppose the spring could lose tension over time... seems pretty unusual though. I think I have a spare spring here somewhere if you want to try swapping it out.

It's amazing what a can of WD40 can do Don't ask what exactly it was, I just went feral on every moving part down there
