yes Harv the studs are splaying out due to flange plate thing bending. this is my dummy grey exhaust. Should have sourced eh engine pipe but ran out of time. I’ll cut n shut this grey one. 2” muffler and tail pipe from the sedan will do the rest with a bit of patching.

Came home to a very pleasant surprise today Bosch headlight lenses, bulb holders, bulbs and adjuster screws. Thanks very much to Rob (ardiesse).

For the life of me I can’t understand how these things work adjustment wise. Installed both lenses as my good one lost half it’s reflective coating when I attempted to blow out dust with compressed air, doh! They sit perfectly but I have only one partly working globe. The last time I bought globes for the sedan I walked in to a roadhouse at Pt Wakefield and picked them off the rotating display.

Let there be light. I reckon there should be a spring going over the screw between the headlight ring and headlight bucket. That should then push the headlight against the back of the screw head for your adjustment. There might be some info in the GMH bible but not having had Bosch lights never paid much attention to them.

I found my headlights adjustments were (read one still is!.......) stuffed. I ended up machining up brass sockets and tapping a thread to accept a new screw before soldering it into the headlight bucket.

Was that after the attendant came out to wash your windscreen, check the oil and take your $5 for the four gallons of Golden Fleece petrol (Standard of course) he pumped? As part of the garage was a workshop & mechanic who actually fixed cars with a drive in lubitorium. Standard was $0.39 a litre when I started to drive Dad's FB. Man have servos changed? Now it's all about selling you a flat white to go, lotto ticket, subway roll and soda!

That’s what I reckoned too. However the manual says that the lens and ring can be removed without touching the adjusting screws. Therefore the top screw must sit behind the ring so the top of the screw bears on the back of the ring rather than the bottom bearing on the front.

No it was later than that. When I first remember putting petrol in my HK kingswood wagon it was 68c/gallon.

I should have included a couple of instructions about the adjusting screws. On the "full-frontal" shot of the ute, you see the square hole on the RHS of the passenger's headlamp surround? That's (I think) where the adjusting screw goes in. The screw head clips into place, but it'll take quite some effort. The adjusting screws came off a junked FJ headlight. They were at 90 degrees to each other.

Best thing, of course, is to see where in the bucket the adjusting screws thread in. Knowing how the Germans do things, I would expect that the adjusting screws are held captive in the surround (so no need for tensioning springs a la Lucas), with a third screw providing an anchor point.

This is all guesswork on my part, though . . .

Thus saith the FC manual:

"The mounting ring, which supports the lighting unit, forms a ball and socket joint with the body to which it is attached (i.e. the headlamp bucket) by the two beam adjusting screws and a retainer screw."

Looking at the headlamp unit from the front of the car, the two adjusting screws are at 9 o'clock and 12 o'clock. The retainer screw (ordinary slotted head) is at 3 o'clock, and engages in the "V" notch in the headlamp surround.

"Replacement of Headlamp Globe - Bosch
1. Remove headlamp rim and rubber seal.
2. Loosen off retainer screw "A" on RH side of lens rim (Fig. 12-37). The light unit can then be removed. NOTE: Do not disturb the beam adjusting screws "B" otherwise the lamp setting will be altered. (I figure that the headlamp surround is supposed to unclip from the adjusting screw heads.)
3. Hold lens and reflector assembly securely in one hand, and release spring clip at back of globe socket. The globe and socket assembly can now be removed (Fig. 12-38).
4. Replace defective globe. Headlight globes are marked "Top" to denote correct assembly. Make sure the globe bayonet tongues drop home into slots by pulling and easing globe forward.
5. Install globe and socket assembly in reflector and replace spring clip retainer.
6. Install lens and reflector assembly to main body, making sure that the heads of the beam adjusting screws engage correctly in the clips on the lens and reflector assembly, then tighten retainer screw "A" securely.
7. Install the headlamp rim and rubber seal, and install and tighten the two rim retaining screws."

They seem good but it remains a mystery. The adjuster heads don’t appear to be captive. The 9 o’clock locates in vertical plane. Possibly 12 o’clock locates normal to that.

On to the cooling. 70oC thermostat cracks. 82oC fully open.

While I was in the kitchen I used a bit of white vinegar to descale it and the top housing. Water pump is corroded.

my radiator stash the one that came with the car looks good. It is shorter than the one from my sedan but same width. EH I assume. Bottom outlet is closer to the damper.
