Getting there Clay

Did you end up using cuts from a donor or make some bits up?

Cheers,

John

Just made bits up John. The old sections I salvaged weren’t quite right. It is only the very bottom so I was able to blend the channel sections to flat just above where they meet the floor. I t was hard not to blow holes in the existing wall even though I joined it about 50mm up from the floor.

Yep it can be tricky. As you know, copper bar works really well behind the weld but can be hard to put in place depending on where you’re welding. I’ve used copper bar with magnets glued into drilled holes with success in this type of situation, or you can just tape the copper onto a length of steel and clamp the steel somewhere, if you get my drift.

I get around it by angling the wire feed more parallel to the thinner sheet. This dissipates the heat away from the weld and allows me to build up some meat towels the new bit to. Also used this trick a lot for filling pin holes. Sometimes it is just not practically get heat sink behind it.

Gday Clay, good to see your progress, almost makes me miss the slog I had with my ute last year! Maybe I'll make a start on my Stude sooner rather than later. Keep the updates coming.

Will you be running the WW2 on your red motor? I had a lot of fun adapting and tuning one from my old 186S HT on my brother's Gem Engines 202 in his HR. That thing positively flew.

Cheers, Joe

Hi Joe
I’ll focus on getting it registered before I muck around with carbs and manifolds I think. I’m angling on scoring a 30000 mile 179 HP from a mate which could replace the 186 if and when it gets rego. Only problem it’s 700km away in Pt Lincoln.
Cheers
Clay

Does make you wonder  maybe they didn't think they would last this long :eh:

Now where was I?

Finally got to completing rust repairs forward of the diff hump. There was a hole in the driver side “rear seat base” area which I waved my magic wand over and managed to turn in to a large blow out. ImageBelted up a patch and screwed it to the chassis rail. ImageImageJust need to grind it back.

Oh bugger, forgot I still have to repair the passenger side front chassis rail. Planning to tip car on its side for this.
