More like $200. Usually on ebay but can't find a link, sorry.
Just saw an alloy set on ebay for $279.
It's a good idea to source you own parts sometimes (no mark up) .

Tony, look at the price of the metal timing gear be it alloy or steel as an insurance policy, particularly if the car is going to be a driver.

If you break down in the city at best it might be one or two hundred bucks to get the car home so you can do the work (I'm assuming you can otherwise in the hands of a competent mechanic add more dollars PLUS the cost of, you guessed it, a replacement timing gear, lol) It also means having to open up the engine a second time when that can so easily be avoided.

In the event you have broken down in the country it will cost you a small fortune IF the gear can be sourced and you can bet it will be another fibre one. You'll have towing, repair and most likely accommodation/meals to cough up for !!!

My grey is getting a steel one when I can find one at a reasonable price - any ideas fella's? I've got an alloy one if need be but like the idea of cold hard steel !!!

Hi Dave Just sourced a alloy timing gear with a steel centre for $340 as the people at southern engine recond cant get steel gear saying that he said you will have no problem with the alloy and alot better that what we have.

Hi Tony...as the others said ..save later hassles and stick an Alloy gear on now.
My wagon's engine got an Alloy timing gear on it when I rebuilt it and it's still going strong (in Fi's Ek sedan) and that car has driven almost every day and done 6 long drives all over Australia to the Nat's and further!! :D 8)

Even Better !!
There is a procedure involving the 'oil feed' tube as well, Tony..but I'm at a loss remembering how to do it at the moment..(has something to do with a self tapping screw directing the oil straight onto the gear..I'm getting forgetful in my dotage   ).
One of these blokes will know how to do it though.
