wheel coating success

Wheel coating update (abrieved version).

After nearly two weeks, I have re-visited the coating of the rims - and to my relief have found it to be bonded and resolute... phew!

I now firmly believe that alloy need be cleaned with a diluted Marine Clean - but at a much weaker solution - I will now do this at the rate of 15:1 and leave it on for a maximum of two minutes....

My intake manifold awaits the next application - stay tuned.....

see - I can write small posts.....

Ok, so I'm running a bit late for Carols.......

These are pics of wheel #5 - probably the best one.
Although I coated wheel # 2 to 5 once previously and flushed it all off again with its solvent because of a bonding failure....

you may see (if the pics are good enough) that there is a "milky" hue to the chrome - it is residue from the previous coat which Marine Clean could not get off - be warned everyone - once this stuff goes off and cures out - it can ONLY be removed mechanically - no chemical is going to get near it.......

OK - pics

I may have stated previously but....

I wanted to completely coat these wheels with Glisten PC - the first section of each wheel was the inside of the rim (where the tyre is fitted to)
Because the entire steel rim is chromed, I wanted to seal it out from whatever and this included the inner - it also seemed logical to seal those unbrako studs (which are driven in at 8 tonnes....!)
My wheel/tyre man tells me that Dragway wheels many years back had leakage problems here so..... well, they won't leak now...

The second stage of coating each wheel was to seal the alloy spoke/hub inner and the chromed steel rim (not mirror chromed, just satin finished) - it took nearly an hour to mask these off from the outer rims/centres..... I hadn't decided on whether I wanted to risk the finish of the chrome/alloy exterior at that stage......

This is where I first became aware of problems with coating alloy with this product..... as mentioned, there are discrepancies in the instructions concerning preparation and cleaning......

The final pic is the outer rim/centre - I had finally won success with coating chrome (front bumper over-rider) and alloy (alternator/intake manifold) and decided to "risk" one - wheel #1 with success..... however, it was with the first wheel which I had mistakenly used Marine Clean to prepare and this etched the polished alloy centre to some extent - fortunately, I was able to easily re-polish it without any evidence of the effect......

As mentioned in the post above - this product will not adhere to alloy unless it is both cleaned with diluted Marine Clean AND AP 120 - a preparatory solution - and not left on to EITHER dry or in excess of 2 minutes......

I have not coated the outer alloy centres - yet - Dragway do a pretty good job of polishing the alloy for you, but I want just a bit more - what you see here with the alloy is almost to where I want to get.... but there's always another day to spend an idle hour or two going in for another polish......

The pic shows the outer chromed rim coated in Glisten PC but not the polished alloy centre - I am yet to get to a final finish with this part of the wheels....

Hope this gives some indication of how Glisten PC will leave polished chrome/alloy - and by the way - it WILL reduce the "depth" of chrome - they look pretty good in the pic - but they ARE coated - anything on top of chrome will reduce that "mirror" finish depth ......

What it does though, is seals it out permanently - and provides a hammer tough coating which I am ever hopeful will preserve the life of them.....

For those with older wheels which show signs of rusting - I would suggest emailing PPC (permanent protective coatings) - or google them - for advice on preparation - I have "issues" with spider rusting...

These wheels will probably look a bit better with the dome centres, chromed nuts and blackened tyres...... and of course, on a vehicle.....
but for now - this is where I'm at with them.... tyres in the new year and then I'll address the rear wheel-arch issue as in the other thread under wheels......

frats,
Rosco....

now where are those Carols..... I'm off for the night....

Merry Christmas everyone...
