Thanks for the tips guys.
I plan to take the whole car to the engine builder to suss it out. I do not have any time to pull it to bits at the moment.
Engine builder was present for the initial fire up, and it only ran for about 2 seconds without oil pressure.
The head is brand new, so I think it is an issue with the decompression plate/the fact that the plate only has one head gasket installed.

the decompression plate should have two headgaskets to seal it up. thats your problem.

I'm interested to see what the problem was
Hopefully not too expensive.
I'm back in Perth 1st week of July, don't s'pose I could come and check the car out? I'm really interested in the turbo set-up. I've kinda been sniffing around a few turbo kits lately and spoke to Mike Vine yesterday about a full Strata kit for a blue 202

Just out of left field - when you put in the decompression plate, did you replace the push-rods with slightly longer ones to make up for the increased distance between the cam and the rockers
I'm thinking that your valve timing might be way out which is over-compressing the engine. This would explain why the engine overheats very quickly and would cause damage to the head or the head gasket (pressurizing the cooling system).

Could that explain your ticking noise as well?

I am not knowledgeable enough to comment fellas. I will leave it in the capable hands of the engine builder

Engine builder has it sussed said the noise was coming from the starter motor gear knocking on the flexplate.
